CAE......A Special Weather Statement is in effect until further notice.....Not sure what I was expecting, but it sure wasn't this

THE ARCTIC AIR MASS HAS MOVED INTO CENTRAL SOUTH CAROLINA AND THE
CENTRAL SAVANNAH RIVER AREA OF GEORGIA.

MUCH OF THE AREA WILL HAVE LOW TEMPERATURES OF 10 TO 15 DEGREES
TONIGHT AND TUESDAY NIGHT. HIGHS TUESDAY WILL ONLY REACH THE UPPER
20S AND LOWER 30S.

IF A LOW TEMPERATURE LOWER THAN 13 OCCURS AT COLUMBIA...IT WILL
BE THE LOWEST TEMPERATURE SINCE JANUARY 28 1986...WHEN THE LOW
WAS 9 DEGREES.

IF A LOW TEMPERATURE LOWER THAN 10 OCCURS AT AUGUSTA..IT WILL BE
THE LOWEST TEMPERATURE SINCE JANUARY 20 1985...WHEN THE LOW WAS 8.

THE HOUSE FIRE DANGER INCREASES WHEN IT GETS THIS COLD. MAKE SURE
YOUR SMOKE DETECTORS WORK.

IF YOU MUST USE A SPACE HEATER...BE EXTRA CAUTIOUS. LOCATE THE
HEATER ON A LEVEL SURFACE AWAY FROM FOOT TRAFFIC. BE ESPECIALLY
CAREFUL TO KEEP CHILDREN AND PETS AWAY FROM THE HEATER. KEEP
HEATERS AWAY FROM ALL COMBUSTIBLE MATERIALS SUCH AS BLANKETS...
DRAPES...TABLE CLOTHS...CLOTHING...CARPETING...AND FURNITURE.

So basically they are telling you not to burn your house down. I've seen all the SWS's now. lol

I probably need to do that as well as mine typically runs about a degree warm. I just take off a degree from the current reading and it's always almost dead on with what other people in the area are reporting. Not scientific lol, but I do what I can.

15.6 at 6:30

13.6 @ 7:22PM

I moved mine into the open about 4 feet off the ground.  No need to worry about sunlight when trying to capture the lowest reading :)

I think six feet is the standard but what wokred for me was 4 at my location.

I thought about moving mine out into the open, but always felt like it radiated and cooled lower than the surrounding areas. Right now it is under the eave of my front porch, facing north. My front porch is about 8 feet wide, so it is 8 feet from the heat source of the house. Do you think I am recording too high of a temp under my eave? Do others (without full weather housing stations) have theirs under eaves?

Interested in where other people put their sensors and glad you brought this up.

This is the coldest temp I have now recorded at my house.  We moved from old location in Granite Falls (7 mi NW as crow flies) in August 2011.  I recorded 9.7 F at that location in January 2011.  7.5 F was recorded in December 2010 and 5.3 F in January 2009.  That 5.3 F is the coldest temperature I've ever recorded since I began taking records in 2006.  I'm hoping to beat it tonight!

Down to 13.3 F with -5 DP.  Wind chill is 8 F currently.

Pretty crazy to see places this cold so early. Many areas in the mountains now are close to 0 to 5 degrees and will drop below zero maybe within the hour in spots. I always watch highlands and it actually is already below zero.

Since around 4:30/4:45pm, it's dropped 13 or 14 degrees here...down to 17.6. It will be interesting to see what the temperature does the next few hours. The models showed this quick drop off to an extent but they  really slow down the cooling this evening. So we should have a good idea over the next few hours if the temps will be colder, warmer, or as projected.

well the plunge in temps seems to have slowed down - the temp is now dropping but much more slowly.  i am in single digits already though lol 8.7 WOW
