TalcottWx
Blizzard warnings have a low rate of verification. Being conservative with them is probably the way to go. Every coastal community from Rockland ME to Provincetown to Long Island NY has blizzard warnings. Boston does not. What is different about the 5 mile stretch of suffolk county coastline? Absurd Eric Holthaus @EricHolthaus Hey @NWSBoston, "close call for Boston but expect near blizzard conditions tonight." What's different in Boston vs Revere, just up the road? PineHillsWx
Im thinking the majority of the area could see 12+ inches. It appears we have an over performer on our hands.. The ratio with this is ridiculous though and has to be kept in mind. Don't remember ever shoveling anything like it and so light. Don't remember it snowing when it's been 7 degrees too often either. weatherMA
Somehow, I am still 25.5 here. Absolutely stationary front Take a walk down the street to see when it gets down to 8F Those below zero numbers down to the ME coast are impressive. wxsniss
Thanks to all the responses on TDWR vs. traditional NEXRAD for OES. Re: wavelength / resolution, I've read TDWR uses 5cm vs. 10cm on standard WSR-88D radars. The shorter wavelength gives it higher resolution, but it also results in attenuation by things like heavy rain drops which can more easily scatter the shorter wavelength beam. But the wavelength / resolution is not what allows better depiction of OES. So as for the OES, the elevation explanation makes sense. Why the difference in elevation? TDWRs were designed to alert airports of low-level issues that could impact takeoff/landing, so the radar beam is pointed very close to the ground, so lowest tilts are 0.1-0.3˚ vs. the lowest elevation angle of WSR-88D radars which is 0.5˚. We don't get to appreciate this much in SNE. Cool learning point!

radarman
appreciate box mentioning the potential screw zone I just hope it is east of here..actually I hope no one gets screwed with it and theres just a big snowstorm area wide tonight! something unique will need to happen for that 12-16 stripe or necn's 12 to verify in this area though lol. I agree with you, a foot seems unlikely out here. Nexrad suggests a hellacious band is overhead, but really the vis wasn't too bad at all. Accumulating reasonably well but tiny flakes presumably due to weak lift.

The thinking behind verifying these warnings is the higher winds at the coast. Point being, there should be no difference between here and most of those other places. More people here though, which increases danger I would think. But I digress
OceanStWx
And for cryin out loud, give me a blizzard warning... the Box snowfall map just highlights how skipping Boston metro is puzzling Well it has nothing to do with snowfall amounts, just visibility, wind speed, and duration. It's silly because in all likelihood it was done to avoid putting their largest city in the blizzard warning. But they are up surrounding BOS so this storm will be called a blizzard whether they wanted it or not. Heck it was called one before today. jamesnichols1989
Looks like the arctic jet wants to join in on the fun with the polar and ST jets both phasing the arctic jet is also in play. If it can phase in time we may see a major snowstorm actually verify for a lot of SNE. The surface low is lowest over NC down to 1003.8mb, while the primary is down to 1004.4mb over PA. OceanStWx
I'm trying to look at it objectively, and I'm not really altering my warning decisions too much based on the population of Portland, ME versus Pittsburg, NH. In fact more people I would probably hedge the higher end to safety's sake.
