JamieOber
Yeah...though reading Wes's thoughts yesterday makes me wonder. He's confident of the warmup but not so much about what might come after that. He said even at 360 hours the pattern didn't look too good to him. I go around and weigh stuff that I read here and here: http://phillywx.com/forum/medium-and-long-range-discussion Wes is quite clear, he's not a longer range guy and he has no confidence past the 17th. There is certainly some question still how long the warmup lasts. One thing that has helped is the sun being out on these cold days...It just makes it seem a little warmer. Sun in the winter is a valuable commodity in our parts, lol.

Hopefully we do reload by the end of the month. Amazing temperature recovery. Already up to 21, thinking we bust on the high side today. Feels nice out today compared to yesterday. Official low at LNS was actually -4 according to Eric Horst.

PennMan
I'm wondering if we get above 0 Tuesday... Looks like it will be very close...northwest of here with any sort of elevation certainly looks to stay below. 12z NAM seems to imply a few tenths of an inch of precip with the frontal passage as snow...maybe a line of snow squalls? It also shows the -31C isotherm at 850mb over Indiana County...ridiculous.

Santa Clause
Quick question, I know our forecast says 33* and rain but it's been below freezing the last 5 or 6 days and getting down to 12 tonight. Is it feasible colder surfaces freeze up even if it's a hair above freezing? Also precip. will be light so latent heat won't be an issue I would think. I'm wondering, based on our history, if we hold onto the cold longer. Which seems to happen a fair amount. The last NAM has us getting around a quarter inch of freezing rain. I noticed my drive way has melted clear. it had a layer of snow and ice after I used my snow thrower on it. current tem is 31. I live in the city, so foremost have to do something that won't walk away.I have directv installed on the garage roof. The garage is about 12' away from the back of the house, area in between is all garden (and steps). Problem is it is shielded by the garage on one side, my three story house on one, and a fence. I could mount it on the eave of the garage, by the satellite. Squirrels love the roof though! (I hate squirrels and wish them all to die).

Make sure you have access to the ws without breakin your neck. I have had my Davis in operation for year now and had to clean spider webs a few times already from the tipping bucket. I highly recommend Davis. If I had it to do again I would have went with the Pro2 instead of the Vue but still am very satisfied.

Oh definitely, with the snow pack and cold ground it won't be hard to ice up surfaces with an air temp that could be a degree or two above freezing. Could be a struggle to get above freezing for awhile as well.

NeffsvilleWx
I want to set up a pws but have no good place for a tripod system (ie a Davis). Any suggestions? Here's an excellent document about Weather Station Siting, Performance, and Data Quality. It's one of the best guides I have found and goes into rather extreme detail. It's one of the official Citizens Weather Observer Program/APRSWXNET guides. Through this program, PWS data gets fed into MADIS for use by NOAA/the NWS. If you do purchase a PWS, I highly recommend enrolling in it. It's pretty cool to know you're helping the community and it also performs quality control so you know if your data is valid or invalid. I've used the QC a bit to dial in the calibration factors on my PWS so that I know my measurements are accurate. http://www.comptus.com/PDF/CWOP_Guide.pdf Here's the link to an overview of the CWOP: http://wxqa.com/ I have a single mast at the peak of my garage with anemometer and I extended the wiring so that my thermo/hydro/bucket are all at the ideal locations. You could easily use a squirrel baffle (the type for birdfeeders) on the mast to keep them off your instruments. I second the nomination for Davis. I went with an off-brand and while mostly functional, the quality just isn't there.

I have a bowl in the field between me and the main rd about 1/3 of a mile away. I should have moved the sta to the bottom of that to see how much colder it was there with the sinking cold air.
