packbacker
If I'm not badly mistaken the euro nailed Sandy 5 days out. It did, GFS was bad, it also nailed the Boxing day storm from 7 days out. But it's had it's misses, it seems in the past when the Euro had a storm like this 5-6 days out with great ensemble support you could get your snow shovels ready. Best you could get in Vegas a couple of years with the Euro at 5 days was even money, maybe not even that. Now you can get 2-1 at 5 days.

Iceagewhereartthou
Is there anything worse than having two back to back horrible winters and then you finally get a winter where you have tons of cold but STILL don't get snow ? Talk about a tease this winter has been. After been tortured the last two winters this is just adding insult to injury. Oh, and seeing south Texas, the Carolina's, possibly Florida, and everywhere in between other than GA doesn't help either. Hi Everyone, first time poster here, long time reader and weather geek. Seems like a good time jump in since my ice age is at least trying to get here! I am right there with you snowstorm - living in western upstate SC is about as bad a place as you can get for snow. We have watched virtually everyone one around us get snow, and every time it comes to the state line (with either GA or NC) and gives us the donut hole, only to reappear over a line from Union to Rock Hill on up. With Dallas having had multiple events, and the gulf coast getting some action now, it is giving me a complex. If Charleston, Savannah, and Tallahassee cash in and we get the skip job yet again, I'm not sure I'll be able to take it. Might have to move to Santa Land (or maybe Northern Florida) to ever go sledding again!

burgertime
This is a map I've had for a while. Euro nailed a storm around the same time frame even down to the fact that it sleeted for MBY during the heat of the storm. Now compare it to 48 hours out Now that is nailing a storm. Looks like a legit threat at this point. Thanks! Yeah, hopefully something will work out for us upstaters too. It is nice to have some cold weather again though, I was starting to think the cold I remember as a kid was just in my imagination. Funny the reaction of some of the folks around here about the cold this year (not you guys, just people in the area = non geeks). It really isn't that much colder than we had just 3 years ago, but I guess we tend to have short memories about stuff like that. Here's to (hopefully) some good times ahead? Brick Tamland
Mine is doing the same thing. Having a heat and air guy coming to or row to look at it. Luckily, I know him and he is doing it on the side.

JoshM
Mine is a heatpump and it did that... the problem was the capacitor that starts the fan shorted out and had to be replaced. Go outside and see if the fan is turning when the heat is on.
pcbjr
If a heat pump, make sure the breaker isn't flipped for the outside compressor. If not, try the emergency or aux heat strip setting - if it comes on you are burning electricity hard but you'll get warm air. If gas - is your pilot on? Got a fireplace? J.C.
Temps rising over the past hour here in Columbia, approaching 40F, interesting. I wonder why the computer models are constantly wrong about the mysterious warming anomaly for Columbia. The local meteorologists actually forecast a laughable low of 18F in the city tonight. jburns
Radar says it's snowing in the swamps of LA/MS and unless it's virga central/south AL. Also says, Lieutenant Colonel... jburns
I just fought my way all the way through the storm thread. I think the only way we can possibly keep up with all the variables is to start a separate thread for each of the ensemble members.

FLweather
If it heats up then cools off then heats up again. I think yours is running fine. Mine does that but I think it does that to prevent the pump from getting too hot and burning up altogether.
pcbjr
Heat pump. Edit: It's working again after it got down to 57 in here. Sounds like your unit was defrosting outside and the compressor went into standby. But the system should have kicked into some mode of auxiliary heat, if that were the case. Check your thermostat to make sure your optional or aux heat mode is engaged. Is your fan set to "auto" on the thermostat? If it is on "run" or "constant" that's likely why you were blowing cold air. If not, it should be set to "auto". Good luck!
J.C.
That's the "Durham Effect". I take it you all experience the same thing over there? Its funny though, the local mets are always forecasting these temperatures that never happen over and over again like they don't understand that the cold air goes around the Appalachians straight to the coast, then back fills sometime the next day just before the southwesterly flow moves it all out. They do this over and over again. 18 tonight in Columbia, yeah maybe 28F.

Also, it seems to be warmer where I live than in other places nearby, north, west and east. I blame it on Jordan Lake and the line of hills through Orange county, but the non-weenie in me doubts that these effects are real.

Higher elevations in NC already approaching -10, with lots of single digits and low teens elsewhere. Higher elevations of upstate just getting to about 10 degrees. But down the "hill", temps much warmer in the mid twenties. Not sure we will get to our advertised low of 12 unless the colder air is just now making it's way down the mountains and will be spreading down and across. Downsloping may be causing some probs as well.
J.C.
The wind blowing there? Very light. Supposedly the front had moved east of the area several hours ago, so you would expect NW winds at least 10mph or greater bringing in colder air, but its fairly calm. The mountains don't seem to slow the cold to much from spreading into your area in Eastern North Carolina, even as far south and east into Wilmington. I have always noticed that the cold comes down the mountains, especially where I-26 is built, straight down into the Greenville area then stops right around Laurens. There is also a delayed cold air intrusion at the top of the Savannah River which I think is due to the the two high mountain ranges that are to the north and west. FLweather
I hate downsloping and the lack of moisture present in the lowest 5000 feet of the atmosphere.
