I've been waiting for years for a 1/88 or a 1/03 type storm....The best storm we've had lately was 1/20/09 and the only reason for that was because of the cold temps after the 5 inches of snow/sleet.  The 12/26/10 storm wasn't that great because of the marginal temps.  Hopefully we'll get a decent storm soon.

Do you mean the 2010 Christmas night snow? That was awesome here. But I am ready for another big one, too. Like more than 3 or 6 inches of snow.

Even though it's stressful as crap looking at the short range models every hour, dissecting radar frames, and waiting for the changeover, it's still a lot of fun tracking winter events.

I agree Cold Rain and I don't mean to sound like a debbie downer.  I'm just ready for a true snowstorm.

Christmas 2010 was a good snow but temps weren't all that cold.  The roads here in Cary were almost clear the next day.

I with you man. When is the last time we had plenty of precip and didn't have to worry about temps? I honestly can't remember.

I'm trying to remember...Probably 12/2010 but temps were like 30/31.  The nice thing about the 1/2009 storm was the next day temps dropped through out the day into the low 20's.  I remember the roads still being a sheet of ice 3 days after the storm.

Not here. They were still covered the next day. And there was still plenty of snow that fell. It doesn't have to close down the roads for days to be a good storm.

That depends on the person...As far as myself goes, the marginal temp storms when the roads are just slush, that's not a great storm.

I'll take them but would prefer the colder type storms.

Yeah, I shouldn't broad brush.  The roads in my neighborhood were slushy and down Old Stage Rd., where the shade was, there were a few icy spots.  But mostly, down here, things were in good shape.  I can't remember the last time roads were snowy for more than a day.

I didn't realize you lived down here Fuquay. I'd hate everything if I lived down there too.

Not sure.  Ryan Maue would be the one to ask of course on Twitter or something.

So the bars on the bottom are the mean of all the members as snow fall?  Even though there are some huge numbers on individual members, it's averaging out with some not showing any snow etc?

Which map are yall contemplating? I have access I can try to explain but I don't know what yall are talking about haha. I'm guessing euro individual ensemble members? If so, the bars at the bottom are the accumulated mean at that hour and from what I understand it takes into account blank (dry) members

Shawn,

Yes, it works out perfectly for KATL on the 12Z Euro ensemble! It isn't overdone at all. A respectable 24 of the 51 members give KATL measurable snow during the 1-10 day period, mainly during the 1/29-31 period. (Aside: one member gives them 0.25" on 1/25 if anyone is curious.) Here are those amounts in inches based on eyeballing (seven of the 51 are major hits and two are near alltime highs; 11 of the 51 are 1"+):

11 (two members), 9, 8 (two members), 6, 4, 3, 2, 1 (two members), 0.75 (five members), and 0.25 (eight members)

These add to 69.75". 69.75" / 51 = 1.37", which is exactly what the bottom graph shows for ensemble mean snowfall! So, yes the bottom shows snowfall, not liquid.
