buckeyefan1
The Northeast Snowfall Impact Scale (NESIS) is a scale used to categorize winter storms in the Northeast United States.[1] The scale was developed by meteorologists Paul Kocin and Louis Uccellini, and ranks snowstorms from Category 1 ("notable") to Category 5 ("extreme"). Only two historical storms—the 1993 Storm of the Century and the North American blizzard of 1996—are in the latter category. The scale differs from the Saffir–Simpson Hurricane Scale and Fujita Scale, which are used to classifytropical cyclones and tornadoes, respectively, in that it takes into account the number of people affected by the storm.[2] The scale, as devised, is intended chiefly to assess past storms rather than assist in forecasts.[3] Kocin and Uccellini's 2004 book, Northeast Snowstorms, includes 70 significant storms and their NESIS rating.[4] The following list documents these, as well as ten post-2004 cyclones profiled by the National Climatic Data Center's list of NESIS storms.[2][5] The most common category is "notable", encompassing 24 events. Most of the storms occurred between December and March, although a few took place in April and November. The earliest rated storm is the Great Blizzard of 1888, and the most recent is the February 2013 nor'easter. superjames1992
Raleigh did get some wraparound BS from the Superstorm. It was a phenomenal storm to get major snows here in the Triad. calculus1
I lived in Lenoir, NC, then. Dead center of Caldwell county. 1.5+ feet of snow. Best storm of my lifetime. Probably won't happen for another 50 years...
Chattownsnow
that was most likely pushing the max amount of snow Chattanooga and anywhere around me could see from any winter storm as far as snowfall is concerned. we were dead center right where you want to be for a storm like that. I wish I was here when it happened. Lived here since 2001 and Jan 10, 2010 was by far the best I have seen for any winter storm so far. my profile picture is from that storm.
