jburns
Actually after I posted about mine I had ran a hair dryer on the inside for about 20 minutes again before I posted. I had given up on it but when I went down stairs my hot water was running! Thankfully I had forgotten to turn off the spigot on the sink. Had I not had that on I would have never known the hair dryer worked. I might have also saved you from a burst pipe as you thawed out the line. The always tell you to open a spigot before you apply heat to avoid a build up of pressure in an already weakened pipe. Sometimes you're better off being lucky than smart. jburns
Tankless hot water heaters really should not be mounted outside. Usually no pipes inside them are insulated. Yeah, I'm having trouble wrapping my mind around that. I wonder if his plumber had just moved in from Key West.
scsnowgirl
I'm not sure where you are located, but it should work most of the day and tonight. Temps in the mid teens and below work best because the freeze is quick. As the temp rises it takes longer for them to freeze I'm in Anderson, SC. calculus1
Well, we burst a pipe inside the wall leading to the master bath sink. It was on an exterior wall, and apparently not too well insulated. I noticed it this morning around 7:30 when I heard water running and noticed the toilet wasn't running nor was the sink. I ran downstairs to the basement room (linoleum flooring, thankfully) under this bathroom and saw water dripping from the ceiling tiles. I hit the main water shutoff quickly and shop-vacced all the water up in the basement floor. It was not too much, thankfully. The leak appears to be in the wall above the basement ceiling. I went outside to dump the shop-vac water and noticed several frozen streams down the outside of the brick on the house from where the upper siding stops and the lower brick foundation picks up. These streams flowed into one big frozen river down my sidewalk and onto the back patio. It would be really cool looking if it didn't mean that I had a problem. Plumbers coming later today to assess and repair. I'm sure they're making money hand over fist today. I really am quite thankful that there is very little if any damage to any of our items, and what water didn't flow outside seemed to go down inside the block wall behind the brick. Tonight I believe I'll leave several ceiling tiles off to expose those pipes to the heat better.

Didn't use the hot water since I un-froze it this morning and it re-froze again, had to take the hair dryer out again.

At the well, as the pipes come into the basement. At the water heater. At the outside faucets. And when a pipe freezes, I add cut offs when I fix it. It's nice to isolate problem pipes so you don't have to do without water, if you mess up and forget to run the water. I've learned tricks over the years and years of having to cut the water at the street, then fix busted pipes days later when the thaw comes. I'd put cut off on the hot and cold going upstairs too so you can isolate floors. The last 30 years have been pretty warm compared to years before, but pipes can still bust every winter. Tony Yeah, well my cutoff is on the whole house, so I haven't gained all the smarts that you have yet. In my defense, I think you have several years of life experience more than me. I am going without water until it's fixed. Perhaps I will get the plumbers to install a cutoff on these pipes since I now know they are exposed and vulnerable to freezing. Otherwise, I'd be sure to get them on the hot and cold coming up from the basement, if you have a central feed. I learned long ago cut offs at the water heater are smart. Best thing in the long run is to run the water at a good stream, hot and cold. Not dripping, not when it's near 0, but at least the fat of an ink pen, lol. The expense of a plumber, or like I do, on my back under the house, in ice water, is just not equal to a few days heating water that just runs, lol. Good luck. dsaur
Open query to bubble freaks. What is the optimal operating temp for frozen bubble blowing? How much glycerine? What is the optimal shape? I've got the bubble mix, multiple hippie colors, but no wand, blower, or bubble making device, so I must construct one. Optimal shape? Circle, circle within a circle? Big circle, big square, 12 pointed star? Buckminsterfullerene? All suggestions accepted.....sensible ones, Burnsie.....and no I'm not going to blow them out my butt, by swallowing a bottle of the mix..so don't go there, lol. Thanks! Tacoma
Principal from my school called me in to start the buses at a Buncombe County school and none of the buses would start. Mechanics are there now trying to jump start the buses and let them run for awhile. Don't know how they're luck is going but right now with good luck we'll have a 2 hour delay and bad luck with the buses not starting would mean we're closed again. NCSNOW
I remember last March we were told to stop the basketball talk in banter and move it to the sports section. Wish we had our own sports forum for SE. Jburns is right about politics and GW, needs to stay out of regional subforum. Sports though we could all handle and have proven it. We are all SEC/ACC with the exception of a few. NFL is mostly Falcons/Panthers with a few more exceptions, MLB is mostly Braves with about as many exceptions as college.
