When we were in NYC this past weekend, we went to the top of the Empire State on Friday morning. It cleared out brillantly after the snow, but it was a bit chilly at the 86th floor. Especially with the wind. I got a great view of Long Island because that was the side of the ob deck shielded from the wind. Looking uptown or toward Jersey, OTOH, was an exercise in character building. But I had to stay up there after bragging about my resiliency to cold to my wife and daughter; face-saving meant face sacrifice. Anyway after enduring that I imaging my daughter can handle tomorrow morning, especially when her outside exposure will amount to 50 feet from the front door to the car, and another 75 feet from the car to the front door of the school.

It was a hell of a lot of fun, though, walking through Central Park on Thursday night with the snow coming down. Kind of reminded me of some of the walks I took through the urban parks here during 09-10. But with skyscrapers of course. I'd never been in NYC during the snow.

I wonder if the school districts are afraid of bus breakdowns? But I'm all in with WinterWxLvr's idea.

It seems like jurisdictions are worried about that on the Eastern Shore.

From Kent County Public Schools:

Frigid temperatures are expected in Kent County tomorrow morning. Please be sure your child is dressed in layers including hats, gloves, and scarves. If possible, make arrangements to have students wait for the bus to arrive in a heated vehicle.

In addition, severe weather conditions may cause unexpected delays such as a bus engine that might not start immediately. Therefore please anticipate delays in bus arrivals.

Arlington has gotten emails from principals canceling patrol duty and other morning activities, but telling people to bundle up.

Taking as sign school will not close in Arlington tomorrow. I know that the county was meeting on it, and these emails would seem to confirm they do not plan on closing.

2 hr delay for you

I also see Fredericksburg City has reconvened and decided to close tomorrow. Had 2 hr delay up earlier

I think districts are in a tough place re: closings.  You know there are those parents who would complain if the school does not close because Tommy has to wait for the bus in sub-zero WCs while OTOH you have the parents complaining that they have to figure out who is going to stay home with the kids if the school closes.

The school district is also saving face from the typical media report of poor little Tommy catching a cold because he waited for the bus with no gloves, hat, etc.  Even though the parents should be at fault there, the school district would get the negative press.  Or you'd have the parent leaving nasty voicemails at the school districts' lack of compassion.

I think its better to be safe than sorry IMO.

The only recent example that I can think of of a DC area school system pronouncing "open on time" then changing its mind was for 2/8/10-- Michelle Rhee's attempt to open DCPS on Monday met with organized revolt during the Super Bowl. She changed her mind and schools closed.

It used to happen more frequently, especially with DCPS, but most of those were during surprise snowstorms like 2/16/96.

Edited to add: 2-hr delay changing to closing happens much more frequently.

Its going to look weird when besides DC they are the only major school system in the DC region open tomorrow

Back in 2010, they were the first or one of the first systems to open on time after the blizzard, and they stood alone if I remember correctly.

MCPS? Or DC?

Montgomery County opened on time the day after President's Day (2/16/10) while most other large systems had delays. But, by that point-- a week after the second blizzard, it was a fine decision.

MCPS...I'm probably fuzzy on the details, but I remember there being no place for the kids to stand at the bus stop except in the road or in a 3' snow bank. I was a bit concerned they didn't have a delay on those days.

You're right on that--- I think the official line was something like: "well these snow banks aren't going to go away for another week or two, so we might as well all try to figure out to how to work around them."

After the Blizzard of '96, MCPS did have 2-hr delays for most of the week after the 1-week closure. But, IIRC, they weren't for all grade levels since there was some sort of standardized testing for middle or elementary school going on that week.

Yep, I remember the 96 delays. It was a bit disruptive, but it made a lot of sense. I was teaching in Poolsville at the time. I guess it always comes down to better safe then sorry.
