I agree that it seems kinda funny cancelling schools around the region but otoh it's not a big deal. Counties have 4-5 bad weather days built into the schedule as it is. Use them or lose them as far as I'm concerned. We usually lose them nowadays.

Tomorrow morning will be well cold enough for frostbite and it's rarely this cold so I understand the logic even if I think it's silly.

Some have 3... like we do in Fairfax.  We only have 1 more left.

Arlington has one more.

People are going to flip out if they cancel.

But they will, because Arlington is the county that has carpet gym floors. And has no balls heavier then a yarn ball at its elementary schools.

Loudoun has 10 days I think....this whole debate today has been laughable. It's not like a bunch of monkeys are sitting in a room throwing darts at a board that says close or open. It's especially funny coming from some who spend 99.9% of their time in a warm home watching the cold or snow out of the window sipping hot chocolate. My guess is every one of them moaned and groaned when they were kids when they had to go to school in the cold...kids today are no more soft than we were...so funny

District of Columbia Public Schools will be open tomorrow, January 7. Roads are expected to be clear, as there is no precipitation in the forecast. Parents should dress their students appropriately to stay warm in the very cold temperatures on their way to and from school. All school buildings are ready to receive students tomorrow, including fully-functioning heat and school meals available for students.

TROOPERS URGE CAUTION AS OLD MAN WINTER BLOWS

(Pikesville, MD) – Maryland State Police are urging drivers to use caution and to think twice before heading out during the expected blast of cold weather from ‘old man winter’.

"fully functioning heat" is a critical assumption.  Because we all know HVAC systems never break down in cold weather.

I think the more important quote may be, "school meals for students."  There's probably a large percentage of kids there are on a free or reduced meal plan and I know jurisdictions take that seriously.

Got this email from Frederick Co Schools, taking it as a sign there will be school tomorrow. If not we are down to only 1 day left built in and will make up over spring break.

With low temperatures predicted for Tuesday, January 7, FCPS shares the following tips on how to dress during cold weather:

*Wear layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing.  Trapped air between the layers will insulate you.  Outer garments should be tightly woven, water repellent and hooded.

*Wear a hat because 40% of your body heat can be lost from your head.

*Cover your mouth to protect your lungs from extreme cold.

*Mittens, snug at the wrist, are better than gloves.

Yeah...it's horrible for kids to wait a few minutes for the bus. Just horrible.

You're right though - kids are no more soft nowadays than we were, so why treat them like they are? And of course kids want off from school. Does that mean they should be given off?

Wow, I've never seen Fairfax County PS closed while Montgomery County PS opens on time.

I expect Montgomery will bow to the pressure and have a 2 hr delay... I would be surprised if they opened on time... basically every county is closed in our area that have something out besides Alexandria, DC, and PG. DC is a special case... Montgomery will delay IMO

They already have it posted on the website. Once the decision is made, they usually stick with it.

:lmao: I come home to this? You old farts keep talking about "back in your day" like common sense ruled the day.

The underbelly has become softer, for both kids and adults. Life should go on during inclement weather. 09/10 was a common sense exception.

Also, in my day 1st place = trophy, 2nd place = medallion, 3rd place = certificate.

Today, 1st through 7th place = trophy, with lunch at chick-fil-a and a moonbounce party at Johnny's house for all the kids that should have tried harder.
