My grandmother grew up in Montpelier, Vermont, in the 1930s. On days when it was below 0, they'd leave the doors to the Statehouse unlocked so that kids walking to school could cut through and get warmed up a little on their way. I guess cold wasn't as dangerous then as it is now.

The "we're not raising tougher kids" train left the station about a generation ago.

Cliche, but I seriously waited for the school bus in a foot of snow and howling winds as a kid in the mountains of PA.

Kids hardly spend much time outside anymore on a nice warm day, so it's no surprise these kids and their helicopter parents freak at adverse and extreme winter weather, even if it seems like we would tough it out and carry on with life.

My boy spends a lot of time outdoors even on the coldest days. The problem is he wears shorts and no gloves and then falls in the creek.

My wife thinks I am crazy,  I just came in from washing the cars outside.  It had been 2 weeks so they were due.  It was 40 when I started it is now 33.  Winds were averaging 25.    My hands are a bit cold.   But hey I got nice clean shiny cars......

Intriguing

Frostburg State University Closed from 5 p.m. 1/6 through Wednesday, 1/8, 10 a.m.

Not surprising. Wind Chills in the 20 to 40 below range are not that common around here. all they need is some dumb college kid getting frostbite because he/she was forced to go to class. Plus, their decision is being supported by many schools/school systems to their west.

Wow... already closed for tomorrow, Prince William is.  From the PWCPS website:

On Tuesday, January 7, 2014, all Prince William County Public Schools will be closed—code green for employees—due to predictions of dangerously cold temperatures and wind chills. SACC will not open. All scheduled activities are cancelled. These precautions will ensure the safety of all students, especially the thousands who walk to school.

The simple solution for this is to have kids only in school during the fall and spring months.

Or just say we are having school unless the temp is 20 below and/or there is 6 inches or more of new snow.  We will run buses on predetermined "snow routes".  If you want to keep your child at home, go ahead, but school will be in session.  Your choice.

They would get them there.  The last place most parents would want their kid is at home.

I agree that it seems kinda funny cancelling schools around the region but otoh it's not a big deal. Counties have 4-5 bad weather days built into the schedule as it is. Use them or lose them as far as I'm concerned. We usually lose them nowadays.

Tomorrow morning will be well cold enough for frostbite and it's rarely this cold so I understand the logic even if I think it's silly.
