WinterWxLuvr
I guess I came across the wrong way. I was agreeing with you. It's no win situation if you're a school official. The reality is we very rarely get a day like we will have tues. so whatever decision are made will have to be dealt with. I think that's the way it is. They feel like they have to do it even though the reality is that it probably causes more problems than it solves.

Herb@MAWS
Driving home from Pikesville to Columbia at 9pm Sunday was one of the worst-visibility drives I can recall in quite some time, outside of driving in mountains/fog. Starting this morning at 42 degrees.

baltimoreguy
Some excerpts from Foot’s Forecast yesterday afternoon: TONIGHT: Temperatures of 35º-40º, rain showers and south winds will continue melting roadside snow throughout the night. "Great!" You might think. Actually this is really bad. With high moisture content in the air, water on roadways, parking lots and sidewalks will have no where to go but wait until the Arctic front arrives Monday morning. When it does, all that water will FLASH FREEZE in a few hours. "But they'll put down more salt, right?" Not if rain will wash away tens of thousands of dollars in road salt in a few hours.EARLY AM MONDAY: The approaching Arctic front will bring a 2-3 hour burst of snow in some areas, making untreated roads very hazardous very quickly with no warning. These snow squalls may arrive right before- or just as- school buses are rolling. Snow between 3-6 AM will have serious impact on early commuters, but a 5 AM to 8 AM arrival would be catastrophic for the AM commute, and wreak havoc on school openings.MONDAY NIGHT: Just. Stay. In. Period. With northwest winds of 25 to 35 mph and temperatures dropping to near 0ºF, there ain't a reason in the world a "non-emergency person" needs to be outside their home. Unless you are in public safety, the medical profession or other society-crucial enterprises, we advise you just stay indoors, at home. TUESDAY AM: When there is direct discharge of Arctic air from...yes... Siberia, then that's how you can get daytime temperatures in the single digits with winds of 25-35 mph. School officials: Think parents will send their kids to the bus stop in that? Think again. As for state waiver papers, better have those handy this year. To sum up, FF says: Roads will not be treated if there is a FLASH FREEZE. 2-3 hour burst of snow this morning, somewhere, which would be “catastrophic.” You should stay home tonight … because it’s going to be cold. Schools should close Tuesday … because it’s going to be cold.

mappy
I heard an interview with SHA on the radio, they will be out putting salt, brine and some thing else to treat the roads so the ice doesn't build up too much once the temp drops. So... yeah.

clueless
Have no idea why Loudoun closed. Maybe the buses were hard to get up and running? Had to go out yesterday evening. needbiggerboat
The "we're not raising tougher kids" train left the station about a generation ago. Cliche, but I seriously waited for the school bus in a foot of snow and howling winds as a kid in the mountains of PA. Kids hardly spend much time outside anymore on a nice warm day, so it's no surprise these kids and their helicopter parents freak at adverse and extreme winter weather, even if it seems like we would tough it out and carry on with life. I know. And the people making decisions are afraid of being sued by their own shadow if they step on it. When I was 15, we didn't have enough money for new shoes to walk to school, so we put cardboard inside when the soles wore through. And we put plastic bags over them when it snowed. And school never closed.

Heck, I'd say 1/3 don't even ride the bus, are driven to school. I remember being the next to last pick-up on way to school and STANDING in isle for the 7 miles to the school many days. You'll never see anything like that nowdays.
