i'm just wondering, why are the lows for Mon and Tue much higher than the forecast lows for tonight?? Aren't we going to have -20 to -22c 850mb temps next week (based on EURO and GFS) and assuming we still have "some" snowcover left, we should easily reach near zero temps by then, right??

I see the MOS has them -4 and -1 respectively, I'm trying to remember the coldest they have gotten in the last 10 years, I thought they got to -15 or -20 during February 03 at some point but can't remember.

I think they had two exceptional mornings in January 2009...one was -14 F and the other -15 F...amazing.

It looks like the GFS MOS is doing pretty well as it has NYC at 13 at 7 pm.

My guess is that Central Park bottoms out around 5-7 degrees as the MOS

has a low of 7.

Down to 11 in Brooklyn. I think tonight is the only chance for this winter for us get below zero. I think a lot of the areas in the outer boroughs do it tonight though. But I don't like seeing modeled lows being only 3 degrees lower than modeled highs for Tuesday. How in the world does that happen? We easily have lows that are 15-20 degrees colder than daytime highs in usual days of winter.

Next weeks shot is actually much colder and more then likely hitting 0 or below. But let's see what happens tonight as the night is still young.

I think it's because the core of the arctic air mass with the coldest 850s is over us during the day on Tuesday.

My thermometer is down to 5.1F here at 8 PM.  Seems a little low compared to surrounding obs but hopefully it's accurate.
