Record Breaking Cold January 3-4 & 7-8 Discussion & Observations

This whole thing is out of control. If you look at what Don posted on the main forum, we are largely seeing the coldest temps in between 5 and 20 years, depending on the location.

It's like saying on a 87 degree day it's the warmest! Same 19 degree difference a whole other ball game!

It's been cold don't get me wrong but the bay here has hardly any ice and was nearly all Ice in 04 and certainly 94!

this will be the mother of all pot hole seasons....  50s coming back, then euro advertised pv return.

Won't be excited for any real storms until the west-based block shows up again in some way. Otherwise this is a progressive, Pacific dominated mess.

The Euro ensembles have been pretty exciting in the long range the past few days. At least to my eyes. This thaw and pacific mess should be rather transient I think.

We'll be talking storms again by next week.

It's all about the views, dramatic words, and being able to report it first.

NBC news reported this morning that NYC set an ALL TIME RECORD low at 4 degrees. It takes some common sense, and 3 seconds to google that to find out that it's wrong.

lol people don't have much sense theses days... Makes you realize how much other news they change. This is why I research my own news and information objectively

All this polar vortex drama will make an awesome South Park episode one day. The media is obsessing over something that is always present.

This is only a big deal because of the rarity of such cold around here. This type of cold was much more frequent in the past, but extreme heat waves have really taken over and are seen as commonplace now so that are far less sensationalized compared to extreme cold. It was kind of cool to actually witness the effects of such cold though from starting the car this morning and the feel of the very cold wind chills.

I wonder how many batteries were replaced the last day or so because they were too weak in the cold weather to start the car up?

After all batteries become less effective in extremely cold weather, especially if the battery is old.

I hope the PNA ridge really develops like guidance shows toward mid-month because he could have several nice snow threats, most of which will probably be Miller B storms. As long as the polar vortex or a piece of the vortex stays on our side of the pole then we'll get more cold and snow chances.

This current arctic outbreak doesn't hold a candle to the arctic

outbreak of January 19-22 1985. Negative 0's into the Deep South. -0's highs most of the northeast, even Miami went below freezing, Wiki has a good breakdown of the event. Oh and we had school with no delay openings. Man we gotten soft.

this outbreak is pretty bad considering what we've experienced "lately" though. to me is it really that bad? no, as I work on sub zero -10-30 freezers with fans on so when its 10 degrees out it isn't severe to me. however, most people don't know how to handle the cold properly so that's where the severity and life-threatening aspect of it comes in :shiver:

Those were much more intense than the current crop of Arctic outbreaks that we have been experiencing in recent years. You can see the same pattern playing out across the rest of the country.

The PV in 1985, dove much farther SE than this PV did:
