If we were to stay in the single digits today that would be very impressive. I don't think that it's happened at least in the last 20 years but it could be as long as 30-40 years. Don S would know for sure

The only Upton climo site, that hasn't set new record yet, is BDR. Currently at 8F. Record low is 7.

My thermometer  here in Coney Island briefly hit 4degs. @8:35am.   Next really cold days should be near 1/19-20, but just 10-15degs. should do it, with some accumulating snow bet. 1/15-22, but not a storm.

John, they are also talking about that on the radio. I thought NYC experienced temps near 0 in 2004

It was +1 twice that year a week apart.

The front page on nydailynews.com says this is NYC's coldest day in 118 years.

 

The amount of hype behind this cold snap is unbelievable. As is the scary talk about "polar vortexes". I hope there's a South Park episode on this soon.

Got down to 2.8 in Lyndhurst which is the coldest temp I've recorded since I set my weather station up in Dec 2008. Previous low was 4.1 in 2011.

NYC's last single-digit high was 9° on January 21, 1985.

HRRR gets LGA to 10 F and NYC to 9 F but has been running too cold.

In case anyone was wondering, running this AM in wind chills of -15 to -20 (along the East River) isn't that comfortable.  But it is still way, WAY better than 35 and rain (the absolute worst running weather ever).

This looks like the first time since 2000 that NYC has set a daily low temperature record without a tie on any day of the year.

Late January frigid snaps can be just as cold, if not colder, than early January snaps. What makes you say that it won't be as bad so early on?

When was the last time NYC officially met wind chill advisory criteria of -15 or below? I wonder if there is a way to find out. I would probably guess 2004. We met WCA criteria today with a -17 reading. That's a win in my book.

Wow, the waters off the coast are just two degrees above freezing. Let's hope to get those temps below freezing so an east wind wouldn't change us over to rain as easily in future storms.

Yeah, that was really impressive for all the summer heat that we have been seeing. We got really lucky with the timing

of this Arctic shot since this is the only day of January that 4 degrees would have set a record low.

there have not be many record lows lately but we did set a record low max for the month of July twice in the 2000's...

Yeah, really not that impressive of a record low...just a day of January that has happened to miss out on the worst of the cold throughout the years. We finally get a record low, but it's a pathetic one at that. lol

I agree...at least we were able to break the 6 degrees or above streak that has been going since 2006.
