Record Breaking Cold January 3-4 & 7-8 Discussion & Observations

The warmth ahead of the arctic onslaught tonight looks to have been significantly under-forecast:

KNYC:

GFS MOS 6z (1am): 42

Actual: 52

KPHL:

MOS: 42

Actual: 54

Models are usually clueless in these warm front situations. It stayed colder than expected much of the day but the warm air moved in sooner as well. We'll see if temps keep climbing through the 50s or hold where they are.

I just want to bring up the fact that EWR is at 58 degrees right now with a forecasted low of 7 tonight, a drop of 50+ degrees :o

Not to mention that's a 33 degree jump from yesterday at this time. I went from 38 to 49 in a matter of minutes around 230 this morning and it just kept going up to 56..after the squall I dropped 7 degrees. Giving the thermometers a work out for sure

Some large daily temp ranges. Yesterday my range was 44-12 and today 56 to probably 18 or so by midnight.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN NEW YORK HAS ISSUED A WIND CHILL

* LOCATIONS...NORTHEAST NEW JERSEY...SOUTHWEST CONNECTICUT...AND
SOUTHEAST NEW YORK EXCEPT FOR EASTERN LONG ISLAND.

* HAZARD TYPES...DANGEROUS COLD AND WIND.

* WIND CHILL VALUES...AS LOW AS 20 BELOW ZERO IN ORANGE...PUTNAM

* TIMING...LATE TONIGHT INTO TUESDAY.

* IMPACTS...PROLONGED EXPOSURE TO THE BITTER COLD AND WIND COULD
LEAD TO FROSTBITE AND HYPOTHERMIA.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A WIND CHILL ADVISORY MEANS THAT VERY COLD AIR AND STRONG WINDS
WILL COMBINE TO GENERATE LOW WIND CHILLS. THIS WILL RESULT IN
FROST BITE AND LEAD TO HYPOTHERMIA IF PRECAUTIONS ARE NOT TAKEN.
IF YOU MUST VENTURE OUTDOORS...MAKE SURE YOU WEAR A HAT AND
GLOVES.

Having this WCA issued is a win in my book, even if we don't go below zero. I don't think a WCA was issued for NYC in at least a decade. Can anyone confirm this fact?
