Some new daily (Jan. 7th) low records set this morning:

London: -26.1°C (-15F)  // -21.7°C in 1942

Windsor: -25.1°C (-13F) // -20.6°C in 1942

Hamilton: -23.4°C (-10F) // -20.0°C in 1968

Burlington: -21.7°C (-7F) // -14.1°C in 1994 (relatively new data set)

All-time windchill records this morning, from various Twitter posts, don't have dates for all of them (Canadian windchill formula):

Windsor: -42 (January 23rd, 1963)

London: -42

Kitchener-Waterloo: -41

Nice to see some WWII records broken... or should I say SMASHED by a nearly 5°C. Very interesting set up in that areas to the south broke more records than the north, due to the WSW flow and the fact that the coldest air was to the SW of the province.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that this is the coldest wx we're going to see this winter.

You know it's cold when we're talking C and F and they mean the same thing.

Just got back from a walk around the local park. I've never seen it - or the neighbourhood streets for that matter - so quiet. All I could hear was the wind whistling through the trees as I walked through the tundra.

Went for a walk last night around midnight. Tundra was a great way to describe it. Sound of the wind whistling plus some blowing snow really made it feel like the closest to being in the arctic that I've ever been. Snowdrifts were awesome in the way they smooth out the landscape, making it impossible to tell where the paths are etc.

Wish I could have gotten out to Lake Ontario this morning to capture the ice crystals rising off the water. Could see clouds rising from the lake all the way from my house.

Yesterday was very cold with a -40+ wind chill and solidly below zero temp all day, but beyond that this much-hyped cold blast was not especially impressive.  First, the real cold air was late arriving on Sunday so we didn't go below zero until evening.  Second, this area came up well short of predicted lows Monday morning.  Cedar Rapids hit -17, which is pretty cold, but not even close to what we had in 2009.  Third, high temps on Monday were generally less cold than expected.  Lastly, last night/this morning the low temperature, again, came up well short of the forecast.  The original forecast for Monday night was about -20, then it was raised to -17, but even the airport never fell below -11.  Here in the city it was in the minus single digits all night.  Right now it's only about -2 in the city, with a light wind.  It's pretty stupid that the local school district canceled classes again for today.  This won't even be a top 10 cold day this winter.

The cold hasn't been too bad in toronto in my opinion. Winds have been calm for the most part but then you get a random gust which feels brutal, but between gusts it is really no trouble at all walking around. It feels fresh. The main issue has probably been the frost quakes. The rain followed by very cold temperatures has resulted in many people not getting much sleep, apparently.

How this stretch of consecutive hourly ("top of the hour") readings of -10º or lower compares to the last great one, January 18-19, 1994, for some places in Indiana. This one didn't have the longevity and was warmer overall than Jan 1994...but still pretty impressive in my book. Certainly nothing to poo-poo.

FWIW, since January 2009 has been mentioned more than once...that one only had 13 consecutive hours of -10 or lower at LAF.

It was -24C this morning at YYZ. Its even more impressive when you factor in the Windchills, lol.

And in regards to your statement, I disagree. Its possible we could see another cool down after Jan 20th. The extent is still unknown but the models want to reload the -EPO/+PNA pattern around Jan 16th-Jan 18th which should ensure another colder pattern settling in to end the month off. Alot of uncertainty on how the AO/NAO will evolve through the coming weeks. I shall look into that later today.
