A-L-E-K
Does the bank clock break on days like this? I cut through a lobby so I didn't pass it. Will check later.
WestCoaster
That's an excellent point actually that I hadn't thought of. We're already a couple hours ahead of schedule with the cold. WSW winds and temp drop off was pegged to begin around 4PM, but our drop off is starting now.

Hoosier
FWIW, the noon temp of -12F at IND ties the noon temp from January 18, 1994.
Hoosier
The NAM and GFS 2m temps are going to be too warm here for 18z...by a few degrees. MOS is better but probably still going to be a touch warm.

mnweather
The coldest wind chill temperature found in Minnesota so far on January 6th is -63 degrees at Grand Marais Airport at 9am (-31 degree F air temperature and 21mph wind.)
cyclone77
Up to -12 here. Coldest air seems to be northeast of this area. The sky is filling up with haze from ice crystals. Sort of like a low-level version of cirrus. Very arctic looking.
blue60007
I left the snow drifted up against our attached garage's door last night....I know our tread/seem is in horrible shape and has gaps galore....So I let the snow be the insulator there as our kids bedrooms are right above the garage and I wanted to try and keep it a little warmer....It actually worked decently as it is warmer in our garage now then it was during the arctic outbreak in early December. You would think that if I put that much thought and effort into doing the above.....that I would have just gone to the store and put a new tread on by now.....nah, too easy....where's the fun in that?! lol The wind has blowing mine inwards and letting it get drafty. Nice coating of snow along the inside walls. I've tried to prop it shut... not sure if its helping. Used the snow that drifted inside to seal up the gaps. Geos
The look of the roads reminds me of those scenes on Alaska State Troopers in the winter! Ice crystals were falling from the coal fire power plant's plume in Kenosha this morning.
Hoosier
I could be wrong but it seems like the models trended a little warmer with 850 mb temps in the past 48-72 hours or so. For LAF in particular, I think some runs were bringing us down toward -32C or even -34C at the lowest.
hoosierwx
Temps were supposed to drop and stay steady in the -8 to -10 range this afternoon and through tonight and rise above 0 tomorrow afternoon. Temps bottomed out about -6 and have risen to -1. I guess we will see if it drops after sunset.

daddylonglegs
I left a potted agastache plant(zone 6 hardy) inside my unattached garage this winter. Last year it would have sailed through winter, but this year it's being tested. During December the lowest temperature inside the garage was 14. This morning it is 7. For added protection I threw a sheet over the plant and even put a pot of hot water under the sheet. I don't want to lose the plant. I have a potted pine tree siting out in the yard...be interesting to see if its dead this spring. My garage I think was warmer, because that is after i moved the can outside for a few minutes that it was -8F...so it probably was closer to 0F in there, but who knows. I have a ton of potted plants in the garage (trees) that i protect. They usually do just fine in there. My tunnel is saying 38.7F right now... -14F here...warming up. RyanDe680
It is insanely cold. I cannot remember when being outside for 2 minutes to go get the mail was painful. Also, I noticed that not only is the salt not working, the pavement on some roads is becoming heaved and very uneven - makes for some nice potholes in the future. cyclone77
Back up to the midnight high of -11. Wind chills still hovering around -40. Definitely one of the coldest days I've ever experienced. The -32 from 2009 didn't feel even close to this cold, since it was dead calm.
