The forecast for Dekalb, IL for tomorrow is a high around 0F.  The high in Aurora (at least the temp at 12:01am CST) was -5F.  Neither is close to a record low max.

CO-OP stations record in the morning; this is different from the midnight-to-midnight time interval used at ASOS/'official' stations.  That means that an observation of high temperature taken at 7 AM on 7 January (tomorrow) covers any time between 7 AM today (the immediately previous daily observation) and 7 AM tomorrow.  It's a little confusing, but these CO-OP station observations will be the ones to look at for records.

EDIT: I saw that Chicago WX explained previously, too.

The low maxes are the standout aspect of this but even then it's going to not look as impressive unless you look at the coop sites with the 7am-7am thing.  With the widespread deep snowpack, things might've really gotten wild with ideal radiational cooling conditions at night.

I have a low tunnel (plastic covered) for gardening that i left up this winter... hit -6.1F inside there...   attached garage was -8F.

I left the snow drifted up against our attached garage's door last night....I know our tread/seem is in horrible shape and has gaps galore....So I let the snow be the insulator there as our kids bedrooms are right above the garage and I wanted to try and keep it a little warmer....It actually worked decently as it is warmer in our garage now then it was during the arctic outbreak in early December.

You would think that if I put that much thought and effort into doing the above.....that I would have just gone to the store and put a new tread on by now.....nah, too easy....where's the fun in that?!  lol

That would be the 3rd coldest noon temperature at LAF since 1973....there was -18F and then 4 days tied at -14F.

So, with the revival, here's where LAF stands with the noon temps...as per Hoosier's previous research.

-14F:  12/24/1983

-14F:  1/18/1994

-13F: 1/6/2014

3 pm:

-14F:  1/20/1985

-12F:  1/16/1977

I'm not sure if YYZ will make it down to -25c (-14f) tonight, given the wind direction isn't right, being out of the west southwest. Toronto generally needs a North or, even better, a northeasterly wind to get its coldest values. I think we will bottom out around -18 (0f) or -19(-2f)

I would be shocked if we bottomed out above 0F. 850s coming in are ridiculously cold, regardless of wind direction.

I left a potted agastache plant(zone 6 hardy) inside my unattached garage this winter.  Last year it would have sailed through winter, but this year it's being tested.  During December the lowest temperature inside the garage was 14.  This morning it is 7.  For added protection I threw a sheet over the plant and even put a pot of hot water under the sheet.  I don't want to lose the plant.
