Toronto4
Tuesday could be one of the coldest days (in terms of mean temperature) in a number of years for Toronto. Environment Canada is calling for a low of -22C (-8F) and a high of only -17C (2F).
cyclone77
Wow. Wow, very impressive. Point for here has been tweaked down to a ridiculously cold -14 for a high on Monday.
Hoosier
Really looks like we're going to get midnight highed here on Monday which is kind of a shame considering the airmass moving in. But the daytime cold should still rival the all-time great arctic outbreaks.

But the daytime cold should still rival the all-time great arctic outbreaks. Yeah that's gonna definitely be tricky. Makes you wonder if there's been some extremely cold days that may have slipped between the cracks, so to speak in the past. So many times you not only have to worry about the cheap midnight high early on, but an evening uptick in temp with WAA with an incoming clipper, etc.

Chinook
as was pointed out by somebody on Twitter, January 4 1981 (exactly 33 years ago) a pretty nasty cold blast hit the GL and Northeast. the NARR plot here shows 850mb temps in the range of -20 to -30C in OH, MI, WI, MN, and the Northeast

But the daytime cold should still rival the all-time great arctic outbreaks. It frustrates me to no end when that happens as it not only affects the monthly mean temperature, but also, when people look at the data years from now, they don't realize just how cold the day actually was. daddylonglegs
I don't like that we really don't have much snow cover here...wish it was a lot deeper with such cold temps.. Going to have very deep frost in the ground.

Ottawa Blizzard
Honestly, it bemuses me to see people in the media and in general freaking out about this cold. The same people that say that winters were always cold "back in the day" are those that are now in panic mode over the cold we're getting.

Going to have very deep frost in the ground. I was just thinking how far does the deep snow pack go. Then I remembered your area has not had any big storms yet. I would be concerned with frozen pipes and such. Down here it should be limited due to a foot and a half snow pack.
daddylonglegs
How much is on the ground? airport says 7... that is a very generous number at least here in my yard...seems more like 4 inches ....its all compacted down. We also had a lot of blowing so some areas are almost snow free.
