Really looks like we're going to get midnight highed here on Monday which is kind of a shame considering the airmass moving in.  But the daytime cold should still rival the all-time great arctic outbreaks.

Yeah that's gonna definitely be tricky.  Makes you wonder if there's been some extremely cold days that may have slipped between the cracks, so to speak in the past.  So many times you not only have to worry about the cheap midnight high early on, but an evening uptick in temp with WAA with an incoming clipper, etc.

It frustrates me to no end when that happens as it not only affects the monthly mean temperature, but also, when people look at the data years from now, they don't realize just how cold the day actually was.

I don't like that we really don't have much snow cover here...wish it was a lot deeper with such cold temps.. Going to have very deep frost in the ground.

I was just thinking how far does the deep snow pack go. Then I remembered your area has not had any big storms yet. I would be concerned with frozen pipes and such. Down here it should be limited due to a foot and a half snow pack.

who was it that said the HRRR is going to be nuts (with a cold bias?)

should be 80 to 120 in Minnesota. Oops. -40

Yeah, too cold.  But still, brrrr.

Interestingly, International Falls wasn't even in the vicinity of a record low this morning.  The record for the date is -40.

URGENT - WINTER WEATHER MESSAGE

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE TWIN CITIES/CHANHASSEN MN

357 AM CST SUN JAN 5 2014

...HISTORIC AND LIFE-THREATENING COLD AIR HAS ARRIVED...

...THIS IS A PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS SITUATION...

.THE COLDEST AIRMASS SINCE 1996 CONTINUES TO MOVE SOUTHEAST OUT

OF CANADA AND INTO MINNESOTA AND WISCONSIN. WIND CHILL VALUES WILL

RANGE BETWEEN 30 AND 45 BELOW TODAY AND CONTINUE TO FALL THROUGH

MONDAY MORNING. AIR TEMPERATURES TONIGHT WILL DROP INTO THE 20S

AND 30S BELOW ZERO. GUSTY WEST OR NORTHWEST WINDS COMBINED WITH

THESE EXTREMELY COLD TEMPERATURES WILL PRODUCE WIND CHILLS OF 50

TO 65 BELOW ZERO LATE TONIGHT AND EARLY MONDAY.

WIND CHILLS COLDER THAN 50 BELOW CAN CAUSE EXPOSED FLESH TO

FREEZE IN ONLY 5 MINUTES. A WIND CHILL WARNING IS IN EFFECT FOR

CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN MINNESOTA AND WEST CENTRAL WISCONSIN THROUGH

NOON TUESDAY.

THE GUSTY WINDS WILL ALSO BRING AREAS OF BLOWING SNOW TO MUCH OF

THE AREA TODAY AND TONIGHT. WHERE GUSTS REACH 35 TO 45 MPH OVER

WESTERN AND SOUTHERN MINNESOTA...VISIBILITIES MAY OCCASIONALLY BE

REDUCED TO LESS THAN A HALF MILE IN NEAR BLIZZARD CONDITIONS. THIS

WILL BRING AN ADDITIONAL LEVEL OF DANGER TO ANYONE STRANDED.

From NWS Duluth.  For all of us in the Midwest, it will be interesting to see where cloud cover remains in place and where it clears out.  This can have a big impact on low temps.

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION...UPDATED
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DULUTH MN
1003 AM CST SUN JAN 5 2014

.UPDATE...
ISSUED AT 952 AM CST SUN JAN 5 2014

MINOR ADJUSTMENT MADE TO GRIDS/ZFP TO MODIFY SKY COVER. POTENTIAL
FOR CLOUD DEVELOPMENT..INSTABILITY DRIVEN OR ADVECTIVE IN NATURE...IS
GOING TO BE SLOWER TO OCCUR BASED ON LATEST SFC OBS/VISIBLE
IMAGERY. HAVE DELAYED ARRIVAL OF CLOUDS DUE TO STEEPENING LAPSE
RATES AS REQUIRED MOISTURE SEEMS TO BE INSUFFICIENT. 00Z 4KM WRF
TOTAL COLUMN CONDENSATE SHOWS CLOUD DECK HOLDING OFF UNTIL
OVERNIGHT PERIOD. MAY NEED ANOTHER UPDATE BY EARLY AFTERNOON TO
REDUCE CLOUDS FURTHER.

.SHORT TERM...(TODAY AND TONIGHT)
ISSUED AT 340 AM CST SUN JAN 5 2014

MAIN SHORT TERM CONCERNS REMAIN FOCUSED AROUND THE EXTREME COLD
TEMPERATURES AND DANGEROUS WIND CHILLS EXPECTED TODAY AND TOMORROW.

WIND CHILL WARNINGS AND ADVISORIES REMAIN IN EFFECT FOR THE
NORTHLAND AND MUCH OF THE UPPER MIDWEST. NO SIGNIFICANT CHANGES HAVE
BEEN MADE TO THE FORECAST. LOWS THIS MORNING WILL BOTTOM OUT IN THE
UPPER TEENS TO LOWER 30S BELOW ZERO...WITH WIND CHILLS RANGING FROM
25 TO 50 BELOW.

LARGE POLAR VORTEX CONTINUES TO ROTATE SWD THROUGH CENTRAL CANADA
THIS MORNING WITH ANONYMOUSLY COLD AIR ASSOCIATED WITH IT. THE
COLDEST AIR WILL MOVE IN LATER TODAY AND PUSH ACROSS THE REGION
THROUGH MONDAY. THE COLDEST 850MB TEMPS WILL RANGE FROM -33 TO -37
DEG C...AND MODIFY LOW LEVEL LAPSE RATES ENOUGH TO PRODUCE A LAYER
OF LOW LEVEL CLOUDS THIS AFTERNOON AND TONIGHT WITH POSSIBLY A FEW
FLURRIES LATE TONIGHT AND INTO MONDAY. OTHERWISE...TEMPERATURES WILL
BE THE MAIN CHALLENGE...ESPECIALLY WITH THE POTENTIAL FOR
SIGNIFICANT CLOUD COVER. EITHER WAY...TODAY TEMPERATURES WILL HAVE A
VERY DIFFICULT TIME WARMING ABOVE -10. TONIGHT WILL LIKELY BE THE
COLDEST NIGHT WITH LOWS FALLING INTO THE UPPER 20S AND 30S BELOW
ZERO. THEN ON MONDAY...HIGH TEMPS WILL GENERALLY TOP OUT IN THE -14
TO -18 DEG RANGE.

THE COMBINATION OF EXTREME COLD...WINDS AND SUBSEQUENT WIND CHILL
VALUES WILL MAKE THIS A REMARKABLE WINTER EVENT. NORTHWEST WINDS
WILL INCREASE TODAY AROUND 10 TO 15 MPH AND GUSTS TO 20 MPH...AND
CONTINUE AROUND 5 TO 10 MPH TONIGHT. WIND CHILL VALUES TODAY WILL
HOVER AROUND -25 TO -45...AND CONTINUE DOWNWARD TONIGHT. THERE IS
THE POTENTIAL FOR WIND CHILL VALUES TONIGHT TO REACH 60 TO 65 BELOW
ZERO IN SOME LOCATIONS. WIDESPREAD -40 TO -50 READINGS ARE LIKELY.
THESE CONDITIONS ARE LIFE-THREATENING AND SHOULD BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY.
CONDITIONS WILL NOT IMPROVE MUCH ON MONDAY WITH EVEN STRONGER NW
WINDS PRODUCING CONTINUED WIND CHILL VALUES 40 BELOW ZERO ALL DAY.

THERE IS ALSO THE POTENTIAL FOR LIGHT LAKE EFFECT SNOW ALONG THE
SOUTH SHORE FROM NRN BAYFIELD TO IRON AND ASHLAND COUNTIES DURING
THIS TIME. SIGNIFICANT DEEP BL MOISTURE WILL BE LACKING AND HINDER
ANY REAL CHANCE FOR LES TO REALLY GET GOING. SO...JUST KEPT WITH
SLIGHT CHC AND/OR LOW CHC POPS TONIGHT AND MONDAY...AND LIGHT SNOW
AMTS. ANY SNOW THAT DOES FALL WILL BE BLOWN AROUND.

.LONG TERM...(MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY)
ISSUED AT 340 AM CST SUN JAN 5 2014

MAIN CONCERN FOR THIS FORECAST TIME FRAME IS MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH
TUESDAY NIGHT...WITH CONTINUING COLD TEMPERATURES. THE VERY COLD
AIRMASS THAT WILL BRING NEAR RECORD COLD TEMPERATURES TO THE AREA
THE NEXT 36 HOURS WILL REMAIN OVER THE AREA THROUGH THE MIDDLE OF
THE WEEK. IN FACT...EVEN AS THE COLDEST 850MB TEMPERATURES SLIDE
OFF TO THE EAST...SURFACE RIDGING WILL CAUSE WINDS TO DIMINISH...AND
IMPROVE RADIATIONAL COOLING CONDITIONS. MONDAY NIGHTS TEMPERATURES
ARE EXPECTED TO FALL INTO THE 25 TO 35 BELOW RANGE...WITH NORTHWEST
WINDS PRODUCING WIND CHILL VALUES IN THE 40 TO 50 BELOW RANGE.
THUS...HAVE MAINTAINED THE WIND CHILL WARNING FOR MONDAY NIGHT AND
TUESDAY MORNING. TUESDAY TEMPERATURES MODERATE SOMEWHAT WITH
SUNSHINE...AND HIGHS SHOULD GET INTO THE ZERO TO 10 BELOW RANGE.
TUESDAY NIGHT TO BE ANOTHER COLD ONE WITH WITH SURFACE RIDGING OVER
MINNESOTA AND CLEAR SKIES OVERHEAD. MINS TO FALL INTO THE 20 TO 30
BELOW RANGE.
