daddylonglegs
Yesterday ranks as one of the coldest days in recent memory for me in Toronto. Funnily enough, I seemed to be the one who was the least bothered by it, perhaps due to having become used to it up in Ottawa. You wouldn't believe how many people don't dress right for the weather, as in no hat/tuque, no mitts/gloves ect. One big cultural difference I've noticed between Toronto and Ottawa is that people in Ottawa, whether young, middle aged or old tend to dress for the weather and are less phased by the cold. I've seen the Rideau Canal skateway jammed with people with temperatures of 0 Fahrenheit. I wear a stocking cap almost all winter...even inside the house! Those people are nuts. Need to keep the melon warm...also long undies, thermal shirt and as many layers as you can handle... I've read that in London they have a lot of deaths due to cold because no one dresses for it over there (cold to them being tropical to us)... Yes, I've heard that more people die of cold in England than in Canada, per year. Canadians (and Americans in the northern tier) are prepared for winter, for the most part at least. People in Toronto just seem to be in shock that cold like this can actually happen here. Too many people have been brainwashed into thinking that cold winters just don't - or can't - happen anymore. Geos
Governor Walker (WI) is considering closing all schools early next week. Wise move. Racine just followed behind them. http://journaltimes.com/news/local/rusd-closed-monday/article_d20dc6b8-74bf-11e3-825d-0019bb2963f4.html Caught this off of WGN tonight. Wouldn't want students to be walking around in this type of air mass. There will probably be issues starting vehicles anyways.

beavis1729
Thanks for posting that map, Geos. That is definitely a keeper. The Chicago UHI is a non-issue; you don't see that too often. It's purely advection-driven cold...and of course the deep snow pack over the entire region (and entirely upstream) helps too. For what it's worth, the 0z UKMET has 850 mb temps of -34C in the NW corner of IL at 12z Mon (60 hours).

Wouldn't mind seeing -15F following a storm, as westcoaster said we could, but as SSC said, the NW wind generally isn't favourable for Toronto in that regard. snowlord81
That is just freaking brutal. Lake Michigan saving the day up here from that craziness. Never seen anything that cold and widespread in all the years I've been a weather nerd. Most of central and northern Indiana will have wind chills nearing 50 below for a period if that's correct. Its almost scary to think about considering I was bitching earlier this evening pumping gas with a windchill around 0.
