Forecasting contest - week of Dec 28 to Jan 3

Unfortunately, our snow cover will be gone for the incoming cold blast in the western suburbs of Chicago - par for the course in this area.

So, let's have a contest for a place where consistent winter weather actually exists. :)

For the week of Dec 28 - Jan 3, predict the following:

INL - lowest temp

INL - lowest wind chill

Statewide in MN - lowest temp

Statewide in MN - lowest wind chill

I will go with:

-33

-42

-39

-49

Good luck!

Yeah, I could see a few spots dropping below -40 if winds lighten up for any length of time.

I stayed with -39 as a compromise.

Brewers - if somewhere in MN really does fall to -45, I believe it will be the coldest since 1/14/2009 (when Babbitt hit -48 and Embarrass hit -47).

If you're curious - here are the record lows for INL during this period:

Dec 28:  -32 set in 1976

Dec 29:  -34 set in 1976

Dec 30:  -39 set in 1990

Dec 31:  -40 set in 1946

Jan 1:  -38 set in 1974

Jan 2:  -37 set in 2010

Jan 3:  -37 set in 2010

December record low temp:  -41 on 12/19/1955

All-time record low temp:  -46 on 1/6/1968 and 1/21/2011

Good question.  I plan to go by the PNS that NWS Duluth typically puts out after every significant arctic outbreak in MN.  They usually list the coldest wind chills and temps for various stations.

Yeah it is a good question.  I always hear the coldest temp in MN comes out of Tower or Embarrass, but there's no ASOS/AWOS there.  I assume they must be CWOP sites or something.
