Chicago - Indianapolis Season Snowfall

Chicago WX

Recommended Posts

A comparison I threw together of season snowfall totals for Chicago and Indianapolis. Obviously, Chicago normally beats Indianapolis in season snowfall...but there have been times when Indianapolis wins. 19 of them to be exact, or 15% of the time. When Indy wins though, it's always been a bad one, or below average season, for Chicago.

Greatest differences in season snowfall totals...Chicago > Indianapolis

1) 51.3" in 1978-79 (both were above average for the season)

2) 50.7" in 1951-52

3) 43.3" in 1966-67 (both were above average for the season)

4) 42.4" in 1940-41

5) 39.0" in 1934-25

Greatest differences in season snowfall totals...Indianapolis > Chicago

1) 27.8" in 1995-96

2) 21.4" in 2002-03

3) 18.0" in 1905-06

4) 10.5" in 1890-91

5) 10.2" in 1914-15

The season snowfall averages are the long term values. 37 of the 129 seasons featured both cities receiving above normal snowfall...or 29% of the time.

As an aside, the snow drought, or lean times, from the late 1910's to late 1940's shows up nicely for both cities.

The distance from Chicago to Indianapolis is roughly 180 miles.

surprised to see 02-3 on there for Indy over Chicago. I was in Champaign at the time and don't remember it being all that great of a year. Not that Champaign is Indy but they often do well under similar events.

Indy on east was best that winter. CLE, CMH, DTW, FWA, etc did really well. LAF was in the same boat as CMI but did ok, though not nearly as good as those to the east.

Ahhh, that makes sense. Thanks

Champaign coops had 26.8" and 27.6" for that season. Of course, you probably missed the biggest event of that winter there...the Dec 24-25, 2002 snowstorm.

Other season totals from central IL and St. Louis:

PIA: 19.2"

SPI: 25.1"

STL: 29.8"

And then Indy on east:

CMH: 50.6"

CLE: 94.9"

DTW: 60.9"

IND: 50.0"

FWA: 46.7"
