What is a "good" winter and a "bad" winter?

I agree with that, it was statistically a stellar month and the period from late December to late January was probably the best I've ever had. It was just unfortunate the blocking couldn't stick around into February or even March because it had the potential to trump 1995-1996.

1995-96 wasn't terribly cold...but it was wire to wire...snow in all 6 of the so called "cold" months...including 4 inches in November and about 16 inches in April.

According to the history books, nothing recently comes close to the insanity of December 1904, when a series of Norlun troughs impacted Long Island that December, contributing to the snowiest month ever seen out there. Cutchogue recorded 49" of snow in December 1904 and Southampton had 57" that month.

Crappiest winters: pretty much the 1990's (except 93,94,96). 2001 - 2002, 2007 - 2008, 2011 - 2012. *

Great winters: 1983 - 1984, 1986 - 1987, 2003 - 2004, 2004 - 2005.

Greatest winters: 1977 -1978, 1993 - 1994, 1995 - 1996, 2002 - 2003, 2009 - 2010, 2010 - 2011.

* Our region sees more crappy winters than greatest winters. Its climo, can't fight it.

1992-93 was so close to being a good winter on NYC & Long Island...which saw about 25 - 30 inches of snow.  The problem was the two big events...December 12, 1992 and the March 1993 Superstorm...were both near misses...the December one put down only a couple of inches and the March one around 10 inches...but just inland, they were far more productive...so nearby, that Westchester County Airport in White Plains measured 50 inches of snow on the 1992-93 winter.

Great winters: 1986 - 1987,

1986-87 was probably the best winter of the 1980's on Long Island...the snow actually got pretty deep by February and the Patchogue NWS cooperative on the S. Shore reported a respectable 40 inches or so that winter.

January 1982 would get the nod as best winter month of that decade out here...unbelievably cold and fairly snowy.

Yes, there were three KU's that winter. I believe the Feb 22-23 event dumped 12+" across CNJ through Long Island but left the city with only a few inches.

1981- Dec 5-6 I was near Boston, had 18 inches as a negative tilted low, extreme, exploded, while Maine had rain.

1981-82 was a great winter capped off by the 1982 April 6 blizzard.

that winter was great in the Poconos...The mid month double snowstorms left a 15" snow cover that lasted all year...When it finially melted in late March the April blizzard and light snow a few days later extended an already great skiing season...

2009-2010 and 2010-2011 would probably fall somewhere in the middle between good and excellent.

I would actually rate 2010-2011 as my favorite winter and 2009-10 not far behind.  Both "broke the rules" and showed that both strong La Niñas and El Niños could produce big snows.

That winter brings back memories.  I was in Boston for the December 5-6, 1981 snowstorm, in law school.  The night before I took a date from Wellesley out, and got back to my apartment after dropping her off when the first flakes started. It was forecaste to be nothing and the next morning there was about 15" of "nothing" on the ground. For the April 6 storm, I had returned to my parents' house in the New York area for Passover and to interview law firms.  I was walking around NYC in the swirling snow and thunder.
