What is a "good" winter and a "bad" winter?

Good= Winter with 30+ inches for NYC, persistent cold, At least 1 MECS, blocking (1995-1996, 2010-11, 2009-10)

Bad= Winter with >20 inches, persistent above normal temps, +EPO aka Alaskan Death vortex, rain is the majority of precip, (2011-2012 worst winter in my life) :axe:

Pretty much agree... got to keep that cold to maintain the snowcover..love the cold, colder the better. Welcome to the board by the way fellow staten islander.

Us weather geeks have a different perspective of a good and bad winter. The winter of 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 were good winters for us, but the average person thinks they were bad winters. Likewise, the average person thinks the winter of 2011-2012 was a good winter, but we think it was a terrible winter.

Me. It would've been excellent had it featured a little more snow and 70's though.

I have bad, fair, good, and excellent. 2011-2012 or 2001-2002 are bad, 2008-2009 and 2012-2013 were fair, and 2004-2005, 2005-2006 were good, and 2002-2003 and 1995-1996 were excellent.

2009-2010 and 2010-2011 would probably fall somewhere in the middle between good and excellent.

10/11 produced over 200% of normal snow across most of the area. i would rate it as excellent

If you only think 10-11 was a good winter you're pretty spoiled.

I said in between good and excellent, February was a dud. That winter was basically a one month winter, but that month was filled with excellent storms so it's between good and excellent. 2002-2003 and 1995-1996 are excellent because they were prolonged winters and each had a major KU in their own right.

95/96 was amazing on li other then the killer cutter. I was far enough easy for the amazing April storm. 02/03 in college in Maryland was amazing too! No class for 7 days after Presidents' Day with 33 inches total snow cover after in Towson md! (Includes a prior storm and the 30 from presidents day) The snow was so deep plowed off the parking garages the guys were jumping off the fourth floor into the snow. Unreal fun. I was in Boston for the 05 storm some of the best rates I have seen. Last years li special missed the south shore of Nassau other the back side we got about 16 in wantagh but pored when it was ripping ne of us that's the ultimate torture storm! 07-12 in long beach featured allot of bad breaks other then Boxing Day which is my favorite single storm with ripping 60mph gusts that actually caused the waves to go backwards out to sea! Very legit drifts around buildings on shore road! Best drift was on ocean parkway near field 4 jones beach easily 10 feet on the far side of a huge parking lot. Ku storms to come not now with no blocking! The 2000s rocked!

Good winter - high precip events falling outside of my morning and evening commute, sunny days without strong wind, weather patterns punctuated by a day or two of unseasonably warm weather to allow me some extra time outside.  And maybe an all-day blizzard or two.

I moved to Long Island in 1971 and can say there was very little in the way of exciting winter weather for the first 29 years...outside of the Blizzards of '78 (2 of them - the 2nd being the legendary one), '82, '83...and the winters of 1993-94 & 1995-96.

What did you receive that month out there?

Feb. 2010 produced 52" up this way.  Probably the snowiest month I can remember

January 2011 saw 41.7" here and the ground was snow covered all 31 days.

Jan 7: 2.5"

Jan 9: 0.5"

Jan 11-12: 18.0"

Jan 18: 0.8"

Jan 21: 3.8"

Jan 25: 2.0"

Jan 26-27: 14.0"

Jan 28: 0.1"

The ultimate storm in a decent drive distance may have been the march 2011 nor'easter at elevations above 3000 feet in the eastern Catskills that had upslope mania

I remember driving home from snow boarding killington after the super insane warm spell that early April and there was still serious snow pack on the ridges above 2500 to 3000 there must have been 70 80 inches up there killington lost almost the whole mountain during that insane tourch I have a pic of me in a tank top at the summit at 4300 feet!

Nice! Nothing better than snow on the ground for an extended period. That to me is usually a solid winter as well

Yep...that's why I put 2010-11 ahead of 2009-10...'11 had snow on the ground 71 days...'10 just 55 days...even though the total snowfall for each winter was pretty close.

From March 1987 through January 1993, it is no exaggeration to say the best winter month on Long Island over those 6 years was November 1989...lol.

January 2011 was the best winter month since February 1934 locally.

I agree with that, it was statistically a stellar month and the period from late December to late January was probably the best I've ever had. It was just unfortunate the blocking couldn't stick around into February or even March because it had the potential to trump 1995-1996.
