michsnowfreak
Side note. ..when I was in the wind shielded woods it was apparent the snow was deeper. Goes to show that you certainly lose some snow to the compaction from drifting.
cyclone77
Still a few hours of January left, but close enough. Not much gonna change between now and midnight. Had 14 subzero days in Jan, with the coldest at -17. Overall a very cold month, but nothing too crazy for overnight lows considering the potential we had, and climatologically the coldest month of the year. Whitelakeroy
Oh the woods is likely 18-24" around here ... not only don't you lose snow to drifting in open fields and yards they are definitely more affected by any melts (above freezing) It just takes longer to lose it in general in the woods. Geos
A great wintry month. Enjoyed the snow, but not the extreme cold. Glad January is over with!

January_stats.jpg Yeah, I'm glad it's over too. Maybe it's cause I'm getting older now, but I didn't really enjoy the extreme cold as much as I used to. Definitely starting to look forward to t-shirt and barbeque weather.

michsnowfreak
The 39.1" of snow in January makes this not only the snowiest January on record (smashing the old record by 9.5" actually) but the snowiest month on record (edging out 38.4" in Feb 1908). Also, the mean temp of 16.4F makes it the 6th coldest January on record and ties for the 11th coldest of any month on record. Only two months in recorded history had more subzero days than the 10 days we had in 2014 (12 days in Jan 1977 and 14 days in Feb 1875). See the Detroit records thread for further details. The word epic gets thrown around a lot on weather boards, and I am guilty of using it as much as anyone else. But looking at Detroits f6 for January 2014, after looking at hundreds of old f6's over the years...it truly is epic. IWXwx
40.2 inches of snow in Toledo breaks old record for a month by almost 10 inches. Congrats. TOL may be the winner for most over average and most over the previous record. But I'm too lazy to look it up.
