usedtobe
Note how simiar the patterns of above normal heights and below are for the 2009, 2010, 1987 and 983 storms were. All had high heights across greenland into Baffin Bay. Almost all the big ones had that except two that had negative NAO but were east based. One had a monster 50 50 that made up for it. That's what I'd hope to eveolve this year if you want a big one. 1967 was even more anomalous, a southern stream system with perfect timing. Could happen but rarely does. I'll start with Dec 2009 since we've got the thread on it already floating around. Now compare that with the pattern centered around our two big Feb snowstorms in 2010 Now 1983, another big storm. Now Jan 1987 Feb 1987 Now 1966 Feb 1958 Mar 1958 MArch 1960, a miller b that worked. Now for two anomalous storms. Feb 1967, an east based NAO with a really strong polar vortex north of Hudson Bay. And 2003. an east based NAO with a strong 50 50 low. 1996, I think the lone la nina case. Note it doesn't look like a nina. positive PNA, negative nao. snow.
looks like the 6-10" type event composite lacked the good west based blocking...more east based, but had the nice vortex off the maritimes and the +PNA
87storms
96 was awesome...i remember the forecast of only a few inches a couple days before the event and as it got closer, the forecast kept getting more awesome until it was 20-30". http://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/current/mcview.phtml?prod=usrad&java=script&mode=archive&frames=70&interval=60&year=1996&month=1&day=5&hour=12&minute=

You still have a negative AO and NAO in the composite
