lindywx
Last evening was the 33rd. Anniversary of one of the Great Arctic Frontal passages of all time. There were widespread snow showers/squalls with the passage (around 5pm) but the temperature drop was the story. Afternoon temps on that Xmas Eve were similar to yesterdays (mid to upper 30's) and with the passage of the front fell to the upper 20's by 6pm. I remember it was 28F on the bank thermometer adjacent to the restaurant that my family ate Xmas Eve dinner at. When we exited the restaurant at around 8:30pm the bank thermometer read 12F. This was already 2 degrees lower than Accu-Weathers forecasted low. Temps continued to fall overnight, bottoming out at -3F in Wantagh and Zero at Central Park. My Xmas Day high temp was 9F Easily one of the coldest days ever on L.I. Amazingly we had a repeat performance 3 years later in 1983.. But as far as Xmas weather memories go, ist place goes to Xmas Eve 1966 (7") and most recently Xmas Day night 2002 with the explosive development of low pressure just southeast of L.I. where went from light rain, drizzle and fog to near whiteout conditions in a 1 hour span of time. stemwinder
But as far as Xmas weather memories go, ist place goes to Xmas Eve 1966 (7") I worked on a railroad tugboat that evening in NY Harbor. Paying my way thru college. Heavy snow, but much of it sleet. Periods of thunder. I believe there was more snow farther west in that one. All of the others I missed, except 12/24/1961, where around 5-7" of good snow fell in NE NJ. A great time to have a good honest winter storm. Looking at a white coating this AM in W Windsor NJ. Merry Xmas and Happy Holiday!

Had 11" in Dobbs Ferry. Went on to have over 60" that winter with 16" in PDII. First year in a long time I couldn't walk through the golf course as a shortcut on the way to school. The worlds climate is cyclical and it will always change without us having any say besides maybe some small variances on a global scale ( not trying to cause a climate debate )

The NWS cooperative at Mt Sinai reported a trace of snow from this thing yesterday (within 1 mile of where I'm at) and whatever is going on there it quite beyond me. Submit a proper report or close the station. The climate record around here is distorted enough w/o adding another station whose observations have no connection to reality.
