Not to mention, December 1889 is the only December on record to have NOT ONE SINGLE FLAKE OF SNOW recorded in Detroit! 1895 -- Just a little too late! Very warm Christmas weather, near 60 degrees, but a cold front slammed through late Christmas night and 6.5 inches of snow fell on December 26th! 1901 -- A Norman Rockwell Christmas scene with "moist snow" falling late Christmas Eve into Christmas Day, with 0.62" liquid, and depth of snow 5.5". Snow "adhered" to everything. Unfortunately, a high of 41 degrees melted some snow. 1915 -- Perfect. Snow began around sunset Christmas Eve and continued into Christmas day, totaling 8 inches. Some rain mixed in at the end, but did little to mar the scene. 1929 -- The 7 p.m. snow depth is 12", the 2nd deepest amount of snow on Christmas day in Detroit's records (behind 1951). This is thanks to a 13.8-inch storm on December 18th and 19th. 1931 -- Warm with thunderstorms reported in parts of Michigan! 1931 to 1933 -- Three consecutive Christmas Eve's topped 50 degrees, though only one (1932) topped 50 on Christmas Day. 1945 -- Late on Christmas Eve and into Christmas morning a raging ice storm occurred, with rain freezing on the cold ground. Christmas morning the temp warmed and the ice began melting (and the falling rain stayed plain liquid) but the landscape was already a dangerous crystal wonderland. This is also the wettest December 25th on record for Detroit (1.16"). 1951 -- After a deep snowcover to begin with, a storm falls Christmas day, heaviest in the morning, dropping 6.2 inches, and bringing the snow depth at 7 p.m. to 13 inches, for the deepest White Christmas in Detroit's records (Note, had they used 7am depth like we have since the mid-1950s, the depth would not have qualified it as the deepest White Christmas, that would have gone to 1929). 1957 -- A VERY rainy Christmas week. 0.94" fell on December 18th, 0.18" on December 19th, 1.00" on December 20th, and 0.99" on Christmas Day. No snow. 1964 -- After six straight White Christmases, a very warm and wet one. 1965 -- A very heavy rainstorm set in Christmas Eve, flooding some basements. After parts of the Detroit area got up to 4 inches of rain, (3.75" at Metro Airport, 2.50" at City Airport), the rain turned to snow on Christmas day, and though only dropping 0.5" on Detroit City Airport (1.0" at DTW), up to 2 inches fell in suburbs, and 50 mph winds blew and drifted the snow causing whiteouts. WHAT A STORM!!! 1973 -- YUCK! The day started out with a nice (but heavy) 7-inch snowcover. But rain and temps in the 40s melted it to a 2-inch deep slush by evening. 1974 -- Though it was 40 degrees on Christmas Eve, the snow depth was still 6 inches, from the mammoth 19.3-inch storm of the 1st (and falls after that) 1975 -- Though the snow depth was 2 inches, a storm hit us on the 26th, dropping 6.3 inches. Just ONE day too late! 1979 -- A very rainy and warm Christmas. 1980 -- After a fresh 3-inch snowfall Christmas Eve, bitter cold set in, with 8 degrees below zero on Christmas morn. 1982 -- A record 64 degrees in Detroit, accompanied by thunderstorms. This still, 30+ years later, has people talking. *note, this was very similar to Christmas Eve 1889. But no one is here to remember that! 1983 -- Mother Nature payback. The COLDEST Christmas one year after the WARMEST Christmas! After a low of 10 below, the high only hit 4 above! 1990 -- Fresh from a 5-inch fall on the 23rd, the 1990s starts with the only White Christmas of 1-inch or more of the decade (although the ground was dusted in 1993, 1995, and 1996, all less than an inch). 2000 -- First time a blanket of snow officially covered the ground on Christmas day in Detroit since 1990 (see 1990 above). Although Detroit's snow depth was "only" 6 inches, the snow depth at the National Weather Service in White Lake (50 miles northwest of Detroit) was 15 inches, with 18 inches in Flint. The snow depth here in Wyandotte was 9 inches. 2002 -- The PICTURE-PERFECT Christmas snowstorm. Snow began around 10:30 p.m. Christmas Eve, becoming heavy at times, and ended early afternoon Christmas Day. Snowfall totaled 6.4" at DTW, with 6.8" here in Wyandotte, and the highest report was 9.0" in Jackson. Brisk winds caused pretty good blowing and drifting as well. 2003 -- For second year in a row, a perfectly timed snowfall. Snow started in the northern suburbs Christmas eve then spread south. Up to 4" fell near Saginaw in a snowband before the main storm even arrived. The main storm dropped 4-6" well north of Detroit with 1.4" at DTW and 2.4" in Wyandotte However, before the storm a 2-hour snow squall from 730p.m.-930p.m. Dec. 24th gave Wyandotte 0.9" with 0.3" in Detroit. So total 20-hour Christmas snowfall was 3.3" in Wyandotte with 1.7" at Detroit and widespread 4-6 inches north of Detroit. The snow plastered the west side of trees. 2004 -- Third time’s a charm! A major snowstorm spread into southeast Michigan late evening of the 22nd and continued through the morning of the 23rd. Snowfall totals ranged from 6 to 10 inches. Wyandotte ended up with 8.5”, and DTW had 8.9”. Accompanying the storm were 30 mph wind gusts so there was quite a bit of drifting as well. Below zero weather arrived for Christmas morning. 2008 -- Chistmas Eve rain and temps into the 40s put a dent in what was a foot snowpack, but Christmas morning still dawned with a nice, albeit now glacier, snowpack of 7" at DTW and 8" in Wyandotte. 2012 -- Though we just squeezed out a White Christmas with just under an inch of snow Christmas Eve night, a snowstorm on the 26th dropped 6.2" at DTW and 6.3" at Wyandotte, just a day late! michsnowfreak
bump To add a little something....a few oddities about Christmases throughout the years at Detroit...... ~5 of the top 8 warmest Christmases on record came from 1888-1895! But, but but....I thought there used to ALWAYS be snow on Christmas? ~1880, 1977, and 2013....all were NOT White Christmases. Yes, I said NOT. Three winters that are infamous for the severity here, and going back to 1906, the winter of 2013-14 is the MOST snowcovered winter on record, with 1977-78. All 3 of these DID have a T on the ground, so its better than nothing lol. ~The 1940s were noted for being a trainwreck for snowlovers here, but we pulled off 4 consecutive White Christmases (1944-47). ~1951 is the "deepest" White Christmas on record. What a sight it must have been. The payment for this? The next 6 Christmases (1952-57) were all bare! ~1965 saw a torrential 3-4" rainstorm hit the area Christmas Eve/Day, no doubt flooding basements.... but the storm did end as 0.5" of snow with 50 mph winds, nice touch I suppose ~1973 Christmas breakfast had a 7" snow depth, and that snow was all but gone 24 hours later after a rainy, mild Christmas. Can you say BAD timing? ~Spring-like thunderstorms were noted in 1889 & 1982 ~The record high on Christmas was set in 1982 (64F), and the record low in 1983 (-10F)! ~1991-99 saw 9 consecutive bare Christmases!!! (there was a T depth in 93, 95, 96)...then beginning in 2000, 5 of the next 6 Christmases were white

Ottawa Blizzard
The best Christmas Eve I can remember is that of 1996. Left Toronto when light drizzle was falling. Once west of Mississauga, an all-out lake effect blizzard started. Kitchener, where we spent Christmas, was buried in a foot of snow by Christmas morning!
