SnoSki14
Yeah alot of people seem to be interested in snow and not much else. The very cold air gets old fast although I definitely enjoyed tracking the record cold earlier this month, but again after a while it becomes more of a nuisance/inconvenience than anything else. A storm on the other hand is far more exciting to track and go through even when it's just a minor or moderate event. The same goes for extreme heat in the summer, it's exciting from a historical standpoint but it quickly gets old and we're far more interested in severe weather than the heat. WintersGrasp
Have the met's opinions changed a bit on this "cold/snowy" period? It seems many opinions have gone from "chance of several big storms the next few weeks and maybe one of the snowiest periods ever" to "maybe we can get a couple inches from one" lol

No doubt the snow makes everything more exciting... I've been keeping weather records for over 30 years at my station and tracking extreme cold is one of my likes. Walking to the school bus stop during January 1977 and February 1979 was as cold as I have experienced here. The winter 76-77 was extended cold with with mostly nickel and dime snow events. But February 79 delivered the cold and PD1. I would have liked to been around for Feb 34 record cold and snow.

Jan-Feb 78 were great for snow and ice. But February 1979 featured the coldest week that I have experienced here with the President's Day storm right at the end. January 1977 was the coldest month. top 5 coldest weeks since 1960: Week/Average Temperature(F) 1/6-1/12........1968....12.2 2/12-2/18......1979....12.7 1/15-1/21......1994....13.9 1/20-1/26......1961....15.5 1/12-1/18.....1977.....15.

bluewave
You may enjoy this article: http://www.garymay.ca/article18.htm Great Article. The 2-9 Arctic blast when NYC fell -15 also set the high pressure record in Pittsburgh. That was probably the coldest reading in NYC since Jan 1780 which had a report of -16. Pittsburgh 30.97 2/9/1934 http://www.nytimes.com/1996/02/06/nyregion/but-what-about-february-9-1934.html By coincidence, Feb. 9, 1934, was the 64th birthday of the old Weather Bureau. On that day for reminiscing, meteorologists noted that the previous all-time low for New York City was minus 13, recorded on Dec. 30, 1917. One meteorologist ventured that Feb. 9 was the coldest day in New York since the American Revolution.

If the energy were to dig and amplify a bit more than we'd probably be talking 2-4" type deal if not a bit more given higher ratios.
Animal
What we need is for the pattern to break on the west coast. No storms at all near SCA that could form a nice southern storm. Pattern is awful. Honestly the worst long range storm pattern in years for snow storms.

PB GFI
18z GFS. The entire week 2 torch look is gone The trough does relax and it pulls back day 11 thru 13 but by Super Bowl weekend the trough heads back east As it is the 15 day period still averages below normal. Even with the pullback for a few days.
