Sometimes the Pilgrim Journals are worth looking at and occasionally the Clovis cave drawings are a hit...we don't want to throw all our eggs in one basket.

when he saw you and scooter post he thought it was time, but alas back to shredding the carpet, just pacing , constantly pacing

Yeah I know the name.

I'm always a bit skeptical of some of the accounts of colonial winters. I do believe they were harsh, but some of them can be over the top...especially when everyone back then was 4'9".

I have no doubt they have to be overestimated, you consider the fact most people badly overestimate the 40s-60s just imagine how bad those folks would have viewed those winters....most people seem to have a noticeable sense the 60s were very bad but alot think the 40s and 50s winters were horrible and in reality most of them were mild, it was only a whisker better than the 70s and 80s temp wise and not much better snow wise either.

The storm of 1717 was very well documented however and bares strong resemblance to the crazy storm in the Adriatic of a couple of years ago., just one of the hundreds of written accounts

In the thinly settled portions of the country great privation and distress were caused by the imprisonment of many families, and the discontinuance of their communication with their neighbors. Among the inhabitants of Medford, Mass., was a widow, with several children, who lived in a one-story house on the road to Charlestown. Her house was so deeply buried that it could not be found for several days. At length smoke was seen issuing from a snow bank, and by that means its location was ascertained. The neighbors came with shovels, and made a passage to a window, through which they could gain admission. They entered and found that the widow's small stock of fuel was exhausted, and that she had burned some of the furniture to keep her little ones from suffering with the cold. This was but one of many incidents that occurred of a similar character
