January 2014 pattern discussion

Where to begin... who knows.   I do like this headline though, because it is true:  "Atlanta colder than Moscow" It's been hard to find our side of the hemisphere as the colder recipients in many years.

The climate is changing, but that change does not occur along a smooth curve. There are ups and downs; this is merely a down time.  Temperatures that is.  The media producers don't know or understand the science of the serrated curve, however.

Hmm..  Should we start hyping that possible d7/d8 snow threat?

Too much hype talk in a discussion thread. That should be in another thread called Hype or something.

By the way, I was in Market Basket doing my weekly shopping yday and was trying to explain about the - EPO/  how ridging in that region can relay cold and pattern reloads.

Read HPC this morning.  Sounds good.  Looks like a cutter on the 13 drags a cf through on the 14th and then winter is back.  Pretty normal January thaw that only lasts Sat-Tues.  Some of my snowpack should survive I think.  If I am reading the Hemispheric map correctly, looks like a split flow with energy in the southern stream and something strong in the northern stream coming over the top of an expanding ep west coast ride.

Ok we got it...coldest in 20 years...but the way the news keeps hounding it you would think we're entering another little ice age...that's the difference. using the term polar vortex isn't the real issue in my book

And LOL at people saying they are trying to teach us by using the term polar vortex. Look at what OKX had to do yesterday on their FB page..probably out of frustration. The media is just using the term to get a rile out of people and scare them. It's the latest buzz word now and nobody has a clue about what it is. An arctic hurricane..lol. Ok.

people probably associate it with the Day After Tomorrow storm where you will freeze to death in seconds!

probably quite a few, stereotypes of people? High school teacher? C'mon Dave everyone stops in Walmart, don't tell me you don't either. Never underestimate the learning power of people. I mean it's not all rocket science, some things like what the PV is can be reduced to understandable terms? I am sure you do it daily. We are not talking physics or calculus or complex formulas here. Before any one posts anything about grouchy, moody, etc blah blah, this is just discussion

I go in there (reluctantly... only game in town for some items). I really have no problem with mets using the term polar vortex in context. I hope they also explain how it is not a new thing or the end of the world, etc.

I should have clarified the Walmart thing by saying the Gardner, Mass Walmart... lots o' mouth breathers. And I would imagine more than 50% of the general public would not spend more than 30 seconds on why it is cold, but just when will it end.

Speaking of cold, the air exchanger in my room is just blowing cold air today. Classroom temp is about 54F   No sweaty students today

You are right and some abused it and some have no clue, but there is a reason weather.com and TWC are number one, people love weather. Mets who tweet snarky all day about wrong info instead should be tweeting right info. The opportunity for education is there, most are just worried about their ego.

I feel like social media is more bad than good regarding meteorology. There is an infinite amount of crap spewed forth. People like Ryan, Phil etc who use twitter frequently have good content, but I just see so much crap out there.

Depends on who you follow.Andy is awesome as well. I have a list of 8-10, the problem might be that there are too many sources , tv , social, radio etc etc.

I'm actually beginning to think that as well.

It is hard to convey science in 10-20 words...that is really the crux of the issue in social media.

You have to carefully choose your words, otherwise it can get taken out of context so easily. Not a lot of mets are able to do that...or they don't quite understand that hyping on twitter can go viral pretty quick even if they intend to reel it in when they go on air or write their "official forecast". Hell on this forum where we can write more in depth thoughts, we still have people take our words out of context all the time.
