TheBudMan
Thanks Coastal. After the initial rise up to 30.2F with the start of the rain the temp is falling back again down to 29.9F Just drove BOS-PSM straight up 95...that was fine, expect 93 would be the same for you

wxeyeNH
Thanks guys for all the travel advice. I just went out and our dirt road which goes down my 500 foot hill is totally ice covered. Not one car has gone by. Everything is ice. If I could get to the main road I would make the trip but right now Im stuck. Our road is a dead end so if there was every a medical emergancy or fire for the 10 houses up here we would be screwed. Ice is worse than snow. Eveyrthing glazed and light rain and 30.1F

wxjim207
Thanks to mixing in the moderate Freezing Rain out air temperature here in Brunswick shot up to 32F however has backed off now to 30F and falling. Cold Air holding strong! 0.13-0.15" of Ice so far for storm total. Trees are bending even more. Multiple reports of Trees coming down in Sagadahoc county (ie Bowdoin area). I don't think so other than the usual ebb and flow. Everything upstream (to our NE) is holding steady or slowly rising. I think it's just a steady, slow climb until the CAA kicks in from the NW tonight.
tamarack
Light ZR and 27 in AUG, looks like about the same at home. The lawns here are nice and shiny, and my driveway at home was impenetrable - any slope meant a slide, until I spread wood ashes. Accretion was 0.2" at home and 0.3" in AUG earlier this morning, might have gained a tenth here, less at home, guessing by radar. Birches are bent, but haven't seen anything broken - yet... Crazy that it took this long since the trials were 10-15 years ago and FAA approved in the spring of 2008. Typhoon Tip
Dodging a bullet here in Ayer. It's 32 on the button and not accreting. I've seen that before though, where if the temp takes a 18 hours to go from 33 to 32 ...there's something about being right on 32, like a molecular phase change and latent heat thing kind of like cheating. ha. I also think any little bit of midday insolation (even at the winter solstice) doesn't help when you're right on 32F. I've been pretty much at 31F through this event and I notice more ice on the N side of the evergreens than the S. And yeah I know it's negligible this time of year...my max solar so far today is only 42w/m^2.

Right ... and it's like "freezing" does not mean "frozen" -- there probably is an equal amount of liq and ice going on, but since there was no antecedent ice, the equal point is still 0. In other words it's canceling out. Kind of need that pulse of 31 DP to tip it in favor of the ice side -- we've discussed this in the past....blah blah

powderfreak
I hadn't been paying much attention because the event is pretty much done here but seems to be an over-performing QPF event today for a good chunk of New England. I didn't know it was going to be raining all day today.

There's probably more dripping than accretion. 31.9F with brightening overcast at times.

There's probably more dripping than accretion. 31.9F with brightening overcast at times. I was just noticing that the "pool" of icing is shrinking. Seems this event has exhausted its supply of cold and now it will slowly fill in... Manchester NH is now above freezing too.
