NYC's 70° December Days:

12/10/1946 70°

12/4/1982 72°

12/29/1984 70°

12/4/1998 74°

12/7/1998 75°

12/5/2001 70°

12/6/2001 71°

12/1/2006 70°

12/22/2013 At least 70°

this could be the only December that averages below normal with a 70 degree day...it needs to get cold again soon...

Hi Everyone

FIrst time poster, long time lurker and weather enthusiast though not nearly as knowledgeable as most people here which is why I tend not to post.  Anyway I just notices something interesting with the current temps in and around the Albany area.  There is a pretty wide range of temps between Albany and Troy (Albany in mid 30s, Troy in low 60s), can someone explain? Is the cold front bewtween those 2 cities?

I am posting the wunderground link, you can see the temps in the surrounding cities as well towards the bottom:

For the record I am from Armonk in central/upper westchester, but just wanted to inquire on the above.

Thanks.

Ok so I checked multiple reporting sites around Albany and I have seen 4 different readings

35

41

54

61

That's pretty intense and it seems like the warm front is hung up over Albany. That's the only way that makes sense.

I think it has to do more with elevation and cold air drainage down the Hudson Valley.

Thanks yea maybe a combo of both.

If New York City's low temperature comes out at 60° or above (the figure for the day so far is 61°), today will mark the first day of meteorological and astronomical winter during which the temperature did not fall below 60°. The latest such date is currently November 27 (a low of 60° occurred on 11/27/1896) and the earliest such date is March 25 (a low of 61° occurred on 3/25/1913).

NYC Sets Winter Record High Minimum Temperature…

New York City had a low temperature of 61° on December 22, 2013. That is the first time during meteorological or astronomical winter that the temperature did not fall below 60°. The low temperature was 3.628σ above the normal low temperature for the date (1981-2010 baseline). The old record high minimum temperature during either meteorological or astronomical winter was 59°, which was achieved on January 4, 1950 and December 4, 1998.

The previous latest 60° or above low temperature before meteorological and astronomical winter had occurred on November 27, 1896 (60°). The previous earliest 60° or above low temperature after meteorological or astronomical winter had occurred on March 25, 1913 (61°).

New York City’s records go back to 1869.
