Chicago WX
Today's snowfall at IND extended the measurable snow season (first and last 0.1") to 156 days for 2013-14. This is now the 14th longest such season in the recorded history of Indianapolis. Of late, Indy's 0.1" seasons have been getting shorter, despite most being above average in total snow...as seen in the last chart. Also, it is kind of interesting to see a fair amount of total season snow dogs on the longest chart (9 of them were sub 20" seasons). Longterm median date of the first 0.1" of snow: November 21 Longterm median date of the last 0.1" of snow: March 26 Earliest first 0.1" of snow: October 18, 1989 Latest last 0.1" of snow: May 9, 1923 Latest first 0.1" of snow: January 4, 1941 Earliest last 0.1" of snow: January 28, 1918 Longterm average season snowfall: 23.2" Period of record: 1884 to 2014 Top 20 longest and shortest 0.1" seasons below. Chicago WX
I've thinking about how this past winter compares to other cold/snowy ones...and trying to figure out a way of ranking them. So I thought this might be a good way of doing it. I took three categories each for temps and snow...and then ranked them, totaled/averaged them up to come up with a "winter score". DJF categories -Mean average temperature -Total number of days with a maximum temp of 32º or lower -Total number of days with a minimum temp below zero -Total snowfall -Total number of days with measurable snowfall (0.1" or greater) -Total number of days with 1.0" or more snow depth I did this Indianapolis, but unfortunately the snow depth category limited me to starting with the winter of 1947-48 (when such records began there). Alas, we got 67 winters to rank. Anyways, this winter for Indy came in at #2. 1977-78 remains king. Still, not too shabby.
Chicago WX
I also did one to include March. So, it's DJFM...again for Indianapolis. And again, 2013-14 is #2.
