Indiana Winter Statistics 2013-14 Edition

Thought I'd throw this little tidbit in here from Mike Ryan at IND.

AN INTERESTING SIDE NOTE ON SNOWFALL CLIMATE...INDY SITS AT 29.5
INCHES FOR THE SEASON EARLY THIS MORNING. REACHING 30 INCHES BY JAN
17 HAS HAPPENED ONLY FOUR OTHER YEARS /1917-18...1973-74...
1977-78...1995-96/ IN RECORDED HISTORY. 2013-14 MAY VERY WELL JOIN
THOSE RANKS TODAY.

IND up to 29.8" of snowfall for the season, through 7:00pm tonight. More on the way tomorrow...which will put them north of 30".

So...here's the list of seasons that had at least 30" total, at the end of January.

48.6" in 1977-78

37.8" in 1981-82

37.6" in 1995-96

32.8" in 1917-18

31.7" in 1973-74

2013-14 entering pretty rare territory for Indianapolis, thus far. And with two weeks still to go in January...

It'll be interesting to see if they make it into the top 3 before the month ends.  I think there's a chance despite no obvious big storms on the horizon.

Maybe Tim can correct me if I'm wrong but I think this is probably the snowiest start to winter in Lafayette history...even ahead of '77-78.  We might fall behind soon though because of that biggie in late January of 1978.

Yep...as far as I can tell, you are correct. 1929-30 would actually be second at the moment.

1977-78 had 44.2" by the end of January, BTW.

Might as well shoot for the stars...

Thanks for posting the Fort Wayne numbers. #2 for January should be a cinch. Might be tough to catch '82, but one can hope.

EDIT: If we were using MBY numbers, FWA would be kicking some records' butt. The funny thing is that the airport usually outdoes me by a few inches every winter, but this year, southwest of there is jackpot.

Plugging in the 0z MEX MOS numbers, and using the 0z GFS raw data for the last day of the month...that would put IND at a mean temperature of 18.1º for the month of January. Conveniently snuggled in-between two all-timers (for cold and snow). List below also shows you how ridiculous Jan 1977 was in terms of cold.

Coldest January On Record (since 1872)

10.3º in 1977

Coincidentally, a met on NWSChat posted the same extrapolated temps this morning, except he combined the MEX and the Euro numbers for the rest of the month and came up with an average temperature of 9° for a projected 18.3° for the entire month.

Thanks once again for posting the FWA numbers.

Nice. Well, looks like a one day torch on Sunday may ruin the "fun" a little for the Jan mean temp. But maybe the cold following will overachieve.

But yeah...no problem on the FWA numbers. Probably going to dig a little deeper into it soon.

This is a good thread Tim! With the numerous snow/cold records or near records we have been accruing here this winter, I may make a similar thread for MI. Then bo can throw in some stats for his area perhaps.

IND, DTW, TOL and Im sure many more cities had 1978 as #1. DTW and TOL have already broken their records, IND has a small chance with tomorrows clipper.

Thanks Josh. Indy looks like they'll be largely missed to the north with tomorrow's clipper. But if things change, they may get a little closer...but 1978 is most likely safe. Updated the previous post with the latest total, through 7:00 AM. Regardless, a January to remember for quite a few locations. :)

Also, here are the top 5 snowiest months of all-time for Indianapolis. Might have a chance to get to #3, depending on tomorrow's snow.

30.6" in January 1978

30.4" in March 1906

27.5" in December 1973

26.4" in January 2014 (thru 7:00 AM today)
