blackngoldrules
I'm at 0 right now but my thermometer outside is usually a couple of degrees off. It all depends on how much radiational cooling we can get tonight as far as how low it goes. The snow cover we now have will help it go down as well. I think it already is since we're already below zero in most places.

ChalkHillSnowNut
I heard that the wind will actually keep us from going as low as we really could!...which is weird....I mean the feels like should be colder than the official low anyway! Hunkered down by the fireplace!
CoraopolisWx
Hi of 50 today, low will be around -5 possibly by 1159 pm. That has to be one of the biggest 24 hr temp drops ever for Pgh.

KPITSnow
-6.1 here Wind is really howling outside wow! Remember it this cold but not with the winds in a long while. Just brutal out. Did the hot water test, and got a cloud of steam and snow. Put a cup of water out and had a half of inch frozen over it in 15 minutes. The river wasn't frozen at all this morning, but by about 10 tonight looked frozen over completely.

Might as well have a little fun with it. lol

Burghblizz
Pitt didnt cancel for -22 in '94, so no surprise there. LWG gator - You still never responded to the fact you ripped the NWS and a red tagger here on two straight storms and they were both RIGHT. Anyway - Nobody is "pulling a stunt" and inflating temps. Weather weenie 101 teaches that you are going have lower temps in outlying areas. But the TV station is going to mostly show the official temperature. If people were so concerned about "hiding" low temps to forward a Global Warming agenda, it would not have been the biggest story the last 3 days. Anyway - i was at -12 this morning
CoraopolisWx
Brutal working outside today, even for a little while. We've had some calm wind below zero temps in recent years. But it's been awhile since we've had the low windchills.

RitualOfTheTrout
Tried the boiling water thing this morning, it was about -8 at the time, its was awesome! I've always wanted to do it lol. My daughter was amazed and thought now we can make our own snow lol. I also tried the bubbles, but it was so windy it was hard to keep them from blowing away. I think the steam and exhaust from my furnace was producing snow flurries this morning to because we kept seeing small flakes. Either that or maybe it was just being blown from somewhere else? Winds seemed to have picked up since earlier this morning.

It was very neat seeing the snow falling, the temp was -8 and the sun was half out. My current temp has now climbed to -0.3 Wind is still gusting though. snowmanwx
850-mb temperature of -32.1°C this morning ranks as the second-coldest ever reported from Pittsburgh. The great cold blast of 17 January 1982 still holds the record with -32.9°C. The record commenced in 1948.

Rdd9108
So now that this epic cold wave is about over. The cmc shows a threat at the end of the week. Didn't really look into it but looks like maybe a 1-2 event if it panned out this way.

Didn't really look into it but looks like maybe a 1-2 event if it panned out this way. The storm is still there. Still not being picked up by the NAM. I have been holding at 1 degree for the last 5 hours. I imagine it won't drop much or maybe rise by daybreak. I am looking forward to the brief warmup. RitualOfTheTrout
Well Pitt didnt cancel or delay classes and my car barely started. Should be an interesting morning. They don't close for cold, and the main campus in the city only closes for snow if its a pretty major event while the regional campuses are more lax on closures and delays. RitualOfTheTrout
Great read on Joe DeNardo this morning in the Trib. I believe he is right on about the hype. http://triblive.com/opinion/ericheyl/5374074-74/denardo-polar-eric#axzz2ppXC9W7U Nice article, and all true. The over hype sensationalist weather reporters and meteorologists are doing it for ratings. I wonder how many of these storys about the PV mentioned that it is a feature that exists every winter? Sure it is rare when it pays a visit to our lattitude but nothing Day After Tomorrow which is what these news outlets would have you believe. Certainly having temperatures at or below 0 for a day or so requires one to be a bit more careful and be prepared its not an end of the world scenario. A bit off topic but one thing I don't mind are schools issuing delays and closings for seemingly less severe weather than I had as a kid, or what the old timers will say they had to treck through. Sure, I bet 99% of the time nothing would happen, but do you want to take the chance that the 1% is your child? In the grand scheme of things what does a few extra closings and 2 hour delays amount to over the course of the school year if it could prevent a potential tragedy? Extra caution, albeit it be somewhat based in self preservation of the schools (trying to stay out of lititgation etc) is fine by me.
north pgh
It looks like an inch or less tonight. NAM now has 2 inches for tomorrow night so all models showing this little burst.
