griteater
Ever since seeing the wind map ( http://hint.fm/wind/ ) which shows the wind field at the surface over the U.S., I always thought it would be neat to see something similar for upper level winds. I recently came across a website that has such a product. The site allows you to view the current wind field all across the globe at the following levels: 1000mb, 850mb, 700mb, 500mb, 250mb, 70mb, and 10mb. Here are some examples: 500mb wind flow centered across North America - http://earth.nullschool.net/#current/wind/isobaric/500hPa/orthographic=-99.29,49.14,605 250mb jet stream level winds centered across the Pacific Ocean - http://earth.nullschool.net/#current/wind/isobaric/250hPa/orthographic=-166.09,34.35,527 10mb view of the stratospheric polar vortex over the Arctic - http://earth.nullschool.net/#current/wind/isobaric/10hPa/orthographic=-90.24,88.55,527 To get different atmospheric levels, you simply key in the mb level you are looking for in the URL, where hPa is equivalent to mb (e.g. 500hPa = 500mb) To get a different location across the globe, do a left mouse click, hold, and rotate...or, you can manually key in latitude/longitude at the end of the URL. To zoom in and out, use the mouse roller
