icebreaker5221
Looks like a couple chances for rain, one on Sun and again on Tue. Northern half of the state looks to do ok but high and dry for southern CA.

icebreaker5221
Looks like a very intense shortwave originating from the Gulf of Alaska associated with ~ -4 sigma 500mb heights should plow into S CA this Thu night / early Fri. This should end up being quite the weather maker, with a risk of heavy rain (locally 1-2"+ LA to San Diego), heavy snow down to 5000' or perhaps below, including the Angeles National Forest, and a risk of small hail and perhaps isolated waterspouts. This is especially impressive considering May is usually the start of the dry season.

icebreaker5221
Impressive STJ setting up. El Niño a possible cause? It's always difficult to determine cause-and-effect between large scale indices and local phenomenon, but this is certainly consistent with an El Nino pattern. andyhb
Got a feeling that this drought relief, when it comes, is going to be fast and furious like the Plains earlier this year. With a potentially top percentile strength Nino coming, one might think this may end up being too much of a good thing.

andyhb
especially with slope stabilizing vegetation in such a bad spot Yeah, the 97-98 Nino did not have anywhere near this kind of drought proceeding it, and still caused a ton of mudslide and flooding problems. Stebo
especially with slope stabilizing vegetation in such a bad spot Yeah, the amount of mudslides that could come with an excessive rain pattern. It is going to get ugly quickly, even with the bit of rain they got in the last 3 days already causing issues.
