I drove north along the Sagitikos Parkway today...roughly from Babylon to Kings Park...steepest gradient I can recall...saw huge bare areas in south facings spots along Sunrise Highway...a couple miles north of that...good solid snow cover...a few more miles north...near the L.I.E...looked like a good 10 to 12 inch snowpack...a mile north of the Northern State Parkway...looked like at least 15 inches...by the time I got to Kings Park...especially on north facing hills...it looked like I was in the Sierras.

I am on the south shore but a little further west so we do still have maybe 10-12 on the ground. Sometimes the micro climate between the north and south shore makes me think of how the island was formed 10,000 years ago at the end of the ice age. The terminal moraines of the north shore are essentially the line where the ice age ended. The 540 line of the ice age if you will.

I talk about this all the time. It's very fascinating. During the last big storm the difference was as big as I have seen. Ice and 32 with 15" new note ground up by 25a while I had 6" of compressed snow melting and 36. I do a little Better in wantagh then I did in long beach which I'm convinced is the least snowy place in ny state!

The roads out here are friggin terrible. While doing patrol last night, I had to help a lot of cars get out of their spots. There is this street on Union st between Kingston and Albany Ave which is unpassable to drive on because the street is an ice skating rink. Every time a vehicle went down this street, they got stuck. My partner and I had to direct traffic for an hour. Everyone on that blocked complained ,so about an hour later, the sanitation truck came with the salt. They had a hard time getting down the block because the block is so narrow.

Also, I don't know if anyone knows this but please, do not angle park on a street. If you do, your vehicle will get a summons.

JB hinting at possible snow sunday nite/monday on artic cold front. After that extreme cold and storms. He changed forecast for stormy/cold March.

NYC is overdue for a double digit March total snowfall of 10 inches or more hasn't happened since 95/96 and in order to equal or break the 95/96 record of 75.6 inches we will need at least 10 inches in March and a little more this month and or April

with the pattern heading into end of this month and into march id be shocked if the forecast holds we don't get one more major snowstorm on the EC before winter packs up for good till the end of this year

I know there's a subforum for this but I figured you guys would find it amusing as well. NWS Chicago's morning discussion:

FOR ANYONE WHO MAY CATCH A TOUCH OF
SPRING FEVER WITH THE RELATIVE WARMTH OF THURSDAY...FORGETABOUTIT!
ECMWF/GFS BOTH PAINT SUCH A BLEAK...DISMAL...COLD...AND
POTENTIALLY SNOWY PICTURE NEXT WEEK THAT ITS LIKELY TO LEAVE MANY
WINTER WEARY SOULS READY TO CURL UP INTO THE FETAL POSITION AND
BEG FOR MERCY FROM OLD MAN WINTER!

Yeah we've set some type of snowfall record over the past few years in every month (oct- feb) except March and April.

I drove out through the south shore on Sunrise Highway out to Patchogue yesterday and there is actually more snow on the ground in Long Beach than out there. There are quite a number of bare spots out through Suffolk and none here. I think us having more liquid content via sleet/rain in the snow and it all freezing up helped preserve some of the snow better than areas further east which had less mixing. There's at least 10 inches still at my house as of dawn this morning.

As for the ice age, I could only imagine what it must have been like back then staring north at a mile high wall of ice. The ultimate rain/snow line for sure. ;)

I was in Patchogue yesterday right along the bay and they only had about 3 or 4" there. As I drove north, the depth increased about 4" every mile. I suppose the 2/13 event was a deciding factor, while I was heavy snow, south of here must have been rain. Have about 13" here just north of Sunrise.

I Was in Long Beach Sunday and was maybe just a little surprised to see there wasn't any difference in snow from there to my place in Massapequa. Although it really shouldn't be that surprising. I work in Bohemia so drive sunrise everyday.  There is less out here too than back by us. Long Island is like a finger sticking out into the ocean.  In the summer, the tips and edges are going to be cooler and in the winter the opposite is true (except the north shore in winter). The closer you are tucked into the mainland or the north shore, typically the better you do with snowfall. We all know that through experience. I like this forum though, a lot of people to discuss our tiny micro climate with.

that's a pretty big decline in march snow. since it's a borderline month anyway it makes sense in a warming climate

That is correct. I'm tasked with updating those tables, which we do at the end of each month.

NCDC provides data from this station here: http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/cdo-web/datasets/GHCND/stations/GHCND:USC00286055/detail

Though, it seems that it doesn't update every day (only up to 2/14 right now).

Scratch that. Even better, go here: http://weatherobs.rutgers.edu/ . These are direct from the Met department.

Thank you so much!

I thought the same thing recently.  100 centuries later...the dividing line is still the same.

what a month it has been…winter of olds

NYC: -4.7 28.8 snowfall    season  57.1

EWR -5.7   30 snowfall   season    60.2

PHL -4.8     21.3  snowfall  season   58.4

With today's snowfall, it is now the snowiest January-February period on record at Central Park. 48.5" this year beats 47.2" in 1996

30's 70's and 2000's. Not sure if that's much of a trend.

That said I believe from other data that the earth has warmed since the solar minimums around the turn of the last century.

32.6 inches of snow in Port Jefferson this month after 30.7 inches of snow last February...I always say February is the snow month out here because water temps are at their lowest and the general storm track is in its most favorable position this time of year.
