AccuWeather Global Headquarters, January 13, 2014 - AccuWeather is pleased to announce it will launch a 24X7 weather channel, to be known as the AccuWeather Channel, in the third quarter of 2014.

AccuWeather had not planned to make the announcement at this time, but decided to accelerate the announcement in light of the controversy that has developed between DIRECTV and The Weather Channel and in order to make the public aware of an additional offering that will be available to them later this year.

AccuWeather is already the leading source of weather forecasts, information and data and is considered to be the most accurate and valuable source of weather forecasts around the world.

The Superior Accuracy™ of AccuWeather forecasts has allowed us to create a strong brand that has saved lives, protected property and placed pinpoint weather information in the hands of our consumers. AccuWeather has been recognized for its innovative and valuable displays and presentation of the weather to the public and private sectors.

AccuWeather's forecasts are the most localized and most customized and it is the only source for day-by-day forecasts 45 days in advance. AccuWeather is also prepared to launch MinuteCast™, which will provide minute-by-minute forecasts for every location in the United States and Canada.

The new AccuWeather Channel will be focused on helping people make better decisions in planning to improve life and safety. It will provide highly localized and customized forecasts, and will round out AccuWeather's suite of services to the public. AccuWeather already provides weather forecasts by smartphones, tablets, AccuWeather.com web and mobile sites, radio, AccuWeather-affiliated television stations, and over 500 newspapers nationwide.

The new AccuWeather Channel will be streamed on AccuWeather.com and other internet sites, as well as through media partner affiliate mobile and internet sites and is expected to be available through cable and satellite carriers.

We need a Weather Channel similar to the original Weather Channel format - also would be great if they covered the major models when they finish their runs similar to what we do here on this forum when there are major events on the way . Its going to be interesting if they let the individual METS at accuweather give their own opinnions or forecasts on that channel since they sometimes are different then the official accuweather forecasts - Henry and Bernie are famous for  doing that........

Bye 'Weather Channel', you're as relevant as music videos on MTV

DirecTV dumps Weather Channel, replaces with 'cheap startup'

The contract stand-off between DirecTV and The  Weather Channel has turned into a Category 5 fail-storm.

The satellite provider has dropped the largely weather-centric cable channel from its subscription service. The Weather Channel portrayed the decision as potentially hazardous for DirecTV subscribers in a statement: “This is unprecedented for The Weather Channel. In our 32 years, we have never had a significant disruption due to a failure to reach a carriage agreement. We offered DirecTV the best rate for our programming, and I am shocked they have put corporate profits ahead of keeping a trusted channel that subscribers rely on every day…This reckless move by DirecTV will have an impact on our role as part of the national safety and preparedness fabric of our country at a time when the volatility and frequency of weather events seems to be increasing. The Weather Channel partners with humanitarian and emergency management agencies at the local, state and federal levels. We help people prepare before storms, stay safe during their effects, and find help afterward. If the network is not available to viewers, the effectiveness of these partnerships, which help make us a more weather ready nation, are jeopardized.”

DirecTV has replaced Weather Channel with another channel dubbed WeatherNation, which Weather Channel dismissed as “a cheap startup that does weather forecasting on a three-hour taped loop, has no field coverage, no weather experts — certainly not any on par with The Weather Channel network’s industry-recognized experts like tornado expert Dr. Greg Forbes and winter weather expert Tom Niziol.”

DirecTV told CNN.com that viewers have plenty of other options for weather information nowadays. “When information is readily available everywhere, it’s no longer necessary for people to have to pay a premium.”

The local stations, particularly channel 7 do talk about the models now but I don't know if people really understand them. Honestly I don't go to the tv at all anymore unless its an unfolding severe weather situation with Forbes/Cantore.

I have trained myself to be an amateur meterorologist (using available free resource output, both goverment and universities) and avoid the WC and local weather people unless I think I detect a dangerous life or death(mine!)or property loss setup. Case in point was 'Sandy' when Euro showed an 1821 type event and the GFS lagged behind 12 hours in confirming it!

Next Wed system is still there . I haven't given up on this weekend yet either .

This is either going to be an epic dissapointment of winter these next three weeks or going to be an epic stretch to remember. In advance i am issuing Weenie Suicide Watches prior to all events forecasted during this period. Mark my words there will be people jumping off the tallest elevation if a storm doesnt come to fruition or gets shunted lol

For Saturday the 09z SREF's came in a bit wetter with the 0.10"+ contour now back into central PA. The 12z NAM however wants nothing to do with it, keeping all the moisture 200 miles plus offshore. Looking at the 4k NAM it seems that snow/rain showers will be possible Thursday and Friday.

1821 hit near Wilmington, NC and hugged the coast. There hasn't been an event like Sandy in recorded history, where a hurricane merged with a large trough and moved NW around a Greenland block into NJ. The 1991 Perfect Storm may be the closest representation, but Sandy was much stronger than that was. The 1938 storm may have begun transitioning into a Perfect Storm-like system though as it was impacting the area.
