WE GOT HIM
Man if only the arctic air would slow down by 8 hours and we can get those -24 850s over us at night, we would have a real chance to go below
donsutherland1
Nothing to complain about this winter so far - we are on a pace for over 40 inches total at Newark and NYC for the season - have to do an analysis of past seasons and see how many ended up with over 40 inches when they had amounts this high for the season by the first week of January.... I agree. I believe NYC and EWR should reach at least 30" this season and 40" is a real possibility.

donsutherland1
You're off the warm train now huh? -EPO has overwhelmed the warmer signals from the NAO. I thought it would be somewhat warmer than normal and odds are increasing that I'll be incorrect. December was +1.0°F in NYC (mostly on account of the extreme warmth late in the month). January should be solidly colder than normal even after considering the temporary thaw. February might make the difference in terms of the seasonal anomalies. In terms of snowfall, I've posted previously about the signal for a potentially snowy winter: http://www.americanwx.com/bb/index.php/topic/41600-winter-2013-14-medium-range-discussion/?p=2557661 I've also provided updated information that is even more encouraging: http://www.americanwx.com/bb/index.php/topic/41600-winter-2013-14-medium-range-discussion/?p=2615189 In the end, I will gladly take a cold winter and be wrong rather than a warm one. Hopefully, the winter will wind up both cold and snowy.

Hopefully, the winter will wind up both cold and snowy. I'd like to see more -NAO blocking develop later in the winter as there have been encouraging signs from the Asian stratosphere and ENSO that lead me to believe the arctic pattern may flip. However the Icelandic low has been persistent resulting in Europe's wet and mild winter with flooding in England. I think the -EPO returns late January, and we wait for blocking at that point which could fortuitously develop at our snowiest part of the season...early February. I still got 11" in Bay Ridge from the last storm and have 18" seasonal total, impressive from two storms that happened without a -NAO block. Having cold air around is helping. Hopefully, we'll get more blocking later this month and especially in February. If that happens and if ENSO Region 3.4 warms as some guidance hints that it will do, possibly creating a stronger subtropical jet, we could be in for some fun times. Even without that development, I believe we'll have our snowfall opportunities.
