SomeguyfromTakomaPark
Interesting that I haven't seen any plows or salt trucks in my neighborhood (Petworth/Brightwood). Last year they preemptively salted for all our non-events. This time they didn't treat the roads whatsoever and they are completely slushed/sleeted over. stormtracker
Why would they issue this during the lull? Because of coming prolonged period of freezing rain with icing falling withing warning criteria
snowfan
Me thinks the cold is going to hang on just long enough to make the morning a mess. Wouldn't be surprised to see a decent number of downed branches......especially where the snow accumulated.
nj2va
Why would they issue this during the lull? Huh? They based it on updated guidance that came in today.
snowfan
When else would you expect them to issue it? When it starts? Why would they issue this during the lull?
Kmlwx
Why would they issue this during the lull? it doesn't have to be happening for there to be a warning... A warning means within 12-24 hours.
needbiggerboat
Why would they issue this during the lull? They typically prefer to issue the warnings before the bad weather moves in.
dmac
Nice, my first warning of the season. I know many didn't like CT DOT up in my old neck of the woods, but does DC even have plows lol? I haven't seen a single one and the road outside looks like a sheet of ice--just as it was a few hours ago. read something yesterday about dozens of "city and contractor owned equipment" roaming dc to prep for this event... but then again, who knows what that could mean in a town where it takes less time to get a pizza delivered than it does to get an ambulance to your house. BTRWx
When else would you expect them to issue it? When it starts? I would think to let the advisory expire first.
Kmlwx
I would think to let the advisory expire first. That's not how it works...Why would they want there to be a gap (even a little) in the warning. Then people will just assume it's over if they see "The winter weather advisory has been canceled"

Then people will just assume it's over if they see "The winter weather advisory has been canceled" Just my opinion, I feel like many past warnings have been issued/upgraded in the process of worsening conditions. Have lead times for winter events lengthened over recent years?
clskinsfan
26/23 With the frozen precip down at this point I dont see my surface temps going up from here until tomorrow. That slug of freezing rain is going to be awful.

That slug of freezing rain is going to be awful. I dunno... It still has a long way to track, and the mid level warmth is already present... I could see it turning to rain sooner rather than later, especially for points south of DC...

dmac
It's just kind of interesting to see. I am not in an important area. It looks like mid-January outside. I love it. 29.8/28 oh absolutely, i love it too - and i'd love it even more if i had more than 1.1 on the ground. still havent seen a plow in rosslyn and its getting quite slick out there. guess i'm not in an important area either
