gymengineer
Mom lives in Annandale and she lost her power around 6. Mine has flickered a couple times and I can hear a hum outside when a transformer goes off in the distance. Based on radar last night, it's clear why Fairfax County would be the bulk of the outages. gymengineer
And I just want say again-- first time I've ever experienced thunder ZR. This was a fun storm!
jnis
Now we have to get out there and clear any ice and snow before it freezes solid tonight.

snownerd
For those who need to commute on 28 it is going at normal speed from Chantilly to Sterling. The parking lot at work was probably the iciest thing I experienced on the commute this morning.
North Balti Zen
A really great winter event for my part of balt city. Three inches of snow and a later of ice over it. Trees are gorgeous. Really awesome start to the winter, especially after the last two winters...
The Dude
It must have happened near here because that flash of lightning was vivid. Makes sense. It was a bit over a mile away from me, and I think I'm about 1.5 miles south of you.

gymengineer
Hmmm, a mid-morning spike in power outages in NoVA--- now Dominion Power alone is reporting 70,000 outages, so up to 80,000 area-wide. ETA: Make that 100,000 area-wide now-- numbers keep climbing for all utilities.
Mrs.J
Left my ruler out overnight. You can see the ice and that it compacted the snow down to just under 6". Had a reading of 7" yesterday.

nw baltimore wx
The sagging three dozen leylands surrounding the castle here that I didn't get a chance to prune this summer are ready for a warm up.

wxdude64
And I just want say again-- first time I've ever experienced thunder ZR. This was a fun storm! Cool, and congrats to all that got to experience that! I had that happen one time years ago in a spring event, freezing rain in low topped T-storm early in am. Surprised me so much that it was lightning/thundering at + - 30 degrees that I called local NWS office to confirm if lightning strikes were detected. EDIT: So, ended here with 1.2 inches of snow/sleet (90% sleet) and 0.20 inches of ice accretion, so nothing major. From looking at cameras I'd say I was at very southern end of anything 'white' on ground, freezing rain being primary precip from me south. Again congrats to those north and east that FINALLY got some decent snow after close to two years! Now if we can get more tomorrow.......

ThePhotoGuy
Roads completely clear and no icing on the trees this morning. I was surprised that temperatures stayed around 32 all night, no warm-up even though I am near the bay. I do think the NWS should have just kept the advisory and not have upgraded to a warning. Grothar of Herndon
As of now I don't think so, but may change my mind in the morning. Icy here on the expected area--trees, bushes, autos, driveways, sidewalks, etc. Roads where treated are just wet, but icy on the sides. Part of the freezing issue here is that the Freezing rain is coming down moderately leading to a lot of the water running instead of freezing on contact. I think light/slower rain freezes on contact better... My rating has changed as woke up with no power. It is what I get for making the statement above. LOL! gymengineer
My rating has changed as woke up with no power. It is what I get for making the statement above. LOL! This storm did what it was forecast to do in terms of the ice part-- major power outage (>100,000 is the type where they can't restore all the power by the end of the day). I think the surprise is where the outages are concentrated.
