CWG does seemingly call out the NWS everytime they screw up on a local forecast, so I don't blame them for being a bit defensive when it comes to the CWG.

I'm not sure that has anything to do with it in this case, but NWS should get over thinking they are immune to criticism.  The uproar (a bunch of it misguided) after Sandy proves quite nicely how important asking questions and wanting to see resources used properly is a good thing.  NWS has just mostly been in a position where their products are regurgitated without comment. That's not how the world works anymore thanks to "social media."

Unfortunately it's not as simple for NWS to truly speak their mind as it is for a small private enterprise like CWG.  They are a government agency and have a lot of bureaucracy to deal with.  A lean private enterprise can be much more efficient, particularly in a local market like this.  I'm sure they can handle the criticism if it is warranted, but sometimes it seems like CWG takes it beyond constructive criticism, IMHO.

I think we more often then not try not to be critical of the NWS but occasionally end up disagreeing with watches or warnings and then pretty much have to either regurgitate them or give their warning and then discuss why we disagree and have less snow or whatever forecast.  I know I always step very lightly when disagreeing as I know the local forecast office has a tough job and their responsibilities are different than ours.  Being a forecaster for any entity requires a thick skin as your always open to criticism.

Yes, very true. At the same time I wish everyone could recognize that someone might think certain practices are off and still think the employees are mostly awesome.  I have once or twice wished the pronouns used were "I" instead of "we" but that's blog talk.

Yeah I don't think CWG has it in for NWS per say.  NWS is probably long overdue for overhauling their dated practices, as much of the federal government probably is, but given the budget cuts of late with sequestration and all, I'm sure they are running on fumes currently.

I don't like Leyland Cypress. They are weak and susceptible to disease. Thuja "Green Giant" is a better bet. Grows rapidly and has a better root system and disease resistance.

You've used them?  Based on the quick web search that I did, they look great.  There's no question that I am going to outlive my leylands, or at least outlive a time when I can continue to maintain them, so I'd definitely consider these as a replacement.
