WinterWxLuvr
Yep. What was that mess of a wind chill map you referenced on your Twitter feed? Its like they were using the old calculations. A record high in the mid 40's. Pretty neat
usedtobe
What's the saying...two things that don't last long, dogs that chase cars and golfers who chip for pars. Maybe add one...people who get too invested in day 6 snow storms. I'd add another, people who root for Danny's Redskins, or was it people who coach them, I forget. nw baltimore wx
Man, that's a lot of work. Do you do it every year? It wasn't until about four years ago that they had to be done at all because they are only 9 years old, But now, normally, yes, every year. Last summer my girlfriend and I did a major kitchen addition/renovation that kept me from getting it done. It's always a lot of work but it's better than a fence and way better than looking at my neighbors. I need to dig up a picture from the 2004 when I put them in so you can see what I mean! In general, I enjoy working in the yard, so I try not to think of it as work.

My parents put in a hedge, obviously not as tall as yours, but enough that my dad had to take it down each year by getting on the ladder and chopping off the top 1/3. My wife wants some screening, but it looks like she will go the low maintenance route, which I am thankful for!

Yeah, when these get old and lose their "screening," I'll probably opt for the dwarf variety. Your wife may still like that one, and it sounds like it is much, much easier to maintain. Google "Dwarf Leyland Cypress Murray X." The only downside that I can see with that variety is that it will either take longer to grow large enough to get the privacy screen you want, or you have to pay more for larger plants. I just did a quick search and found this video from a local nursery.
WinterWxLuvr
Leylands are something else. I'm convinced you could take a chain saw to them and two years later you would have a perfectly shaped tree.

mattie g
I think most people say that about their weather. People are dumb. You know what hey say about the weather in San Diego... Just wait a minute because it's going to change. Cluck!
PhineasC
I don't like Leyland Cypress. They are weak and susceptible to disease. Thuja "Green Giant" is a better bet. Grows rapidly and has a better root system and disease resistance.
87storms
i don't understand why there's even a discussion over posting HPC discussions in a discussion thread. i guess people don't want to hear what experts have to say about a potential pattern. 87storms
I'm definitely more interested in the guy who has a hunch about the storm. i like how this forum provides an outlet for people to discuss the weather, but i don't think i've ever seen a forum where people complain more about what other people post. i don't think that element has changed much since when i used to lurk on eastern. one of the reasons i try to stay out of discussions is because i just don't have the patience to deal with that bs, not in an online setting at least. i rather just weed through the complaining and negativity and see what people like you, wes, chill, etc have to say. Yeah, I've never totally got the need for people to try to set so many rules. I've always been of the belief we should generally have everyone post however they want to. I do think at some pts the copy/paste becomes too much.. perhaps in a big severe outbreak or something if someone pastes every warning. But in general it's not a big deal. People should just learn how to scroll past stuff they aren't interested in.

Eh, as much as I think an amateur can be really good at forecasting -- better than some mets even -- not sure that's true. The HPC/SPC/NHCs all have pretty much the top experts in the various sub-fields. It might not be anything super surprising to someone dialed in but they are still worth reading from time to time at least. Although if you see responses I got from NWS guys on Twitter today you'd think I hate NWS or something.

I'm not sure that was something that came from us as an order though. More or less I'm in the camp of "let things evolve" perhaps with "modest framing." Though since we did subforum this place all to hell we might as well spread out our conversation a bit more. There were plenty of valid complaints from people who don't live on the board 24/7 but visit daily that it was hard to sift through all the posts. Fair enough, and I respect your opinion, but, if it were me, I'd set the board up to better serve those who are here frequently, not just the drive bys. I think anyone who is truthful will admit that the board is at its most fun when something is drawing all the posters to a single thread and there is some banter to go along with the weather posts. At least for me, that's when it's the most fun.

In some ways I've gone kicking and screaming into the changes we've needed to make as the board got really large. I have been vocal once or twice about what I think are overdeletions of comments. I don't generally can related banter in the main threads. I think if you know you're (global) making a stupid troll joke or something similar it's probably best to come here. CWG does seemingly call out the NWS everytime they screw up on a local forecast, so I don't blame them for being a bit defensive when it comes to the CWG.
