December 8-9th Winter Storm

Chicago Storm

Recommended Posts

Major bust in the making for central WI. Banding is trying to organize overhead - not all the snow from it is making it to the ground yet.

Flakes looking pretty big in Libertyville, Tuanis.

Updated MKX predictions.

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION...UPDATED
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE MILWAUKEE/SULLIVAN WI
1107 AM CST SUN DEC 8 2013

.UPDATE...

MODERATE SNOW OCCURRING WITH LAKE EFFECT BAND FROM OZAUKEE COUNTY
THROUGH WAUKESHA/MILWAUKEE AND INTO WALWORTH AND WESTERN RACINE
COUNTIES. STARTED WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IN MOST OF THIS AREA
EARLY TO ACCOUNT FOR THIS BAND. A QUICK 1 TO 2 INCHES OF SNOW IS
EXPECTED BY EARLY THIS AFTERNOON...BEFORE SHIFTING NORTHWARD INTO
MAINLY OZAUKEE AND SHEBOYGAN COUNTIES. WASHINGTON COUNTY MAY SEE
SOME OF THIS BAND AS WELL. WILL HAVE TO MONITOR TRENDS WITH THIS
BAND...AS IT WILL PRODUCE 1/2 TO 1 INCH PER HOUR SNOWFALL RATES.

WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY BEGINS FOR THE REST OF THE AREA AT NOON.
DELAYED START IN THE FAR WESTERN COUNTIES...AS ANY SNOW THAT IS
FALLING IS FAIRLY LIGHT. MAIN AREA OF MODERATE SNOW IS IN NORTHERN
ILLINOIS BACK INTO EASTERN IOWA. THIS WILL SHIFT NORTH NORTHEAST
INTO THE AREA EARLY THIS AFTERNOON. EXPECT THE SNOW TO LINGER
THROUGH THE AFTERNOON AND EVENING...BEFORE TAPERING OFF FROM
SOUTHWEST TO NORTHEAST LATER TONIGHT.

STILL EXPECTING A GENERAL 3 TO 5 INCHES OF TOTAL ACCUMULATION
ACROSS THE AREA...EXCEPT A 4 TO 6 INCH RANGE NEAR LAKE MICHIGAN
WITH THE CURRENT LAKE EFFECT AND LAKE ENHANCEMENT LATER ON.

They are riding that 3-5 idea into the ground.

Their attempt at a detailed snow map will likely fail for a good portion of the region anyway.  Lowest amounts will be in the far NW, highest amounts near the lake, where they had the lowest amounts in the far SE near the lake, highest amounts in Sheboygan and Ozaukee Counties.

The snow has picked up some here, but the flakes are still only 1/8 inch at best.  We will likely need to improve on the size, at least in bursts, to have a shot at 3".

Interesting.  Even during the much slower rates flake size here has been decent.  Some of the heavier bands have actually had some very beefy flakes.   Must be some micro screw holes mixed in with the precip today.

some of the heavier early banding/virga was over your area...probably a little deeper moisture through the column there

nothing but squinters here (NBS)

//DISCUSSION...UPDATED 18Z...

LIGHT SNOW ONGOING ACROSS ALL THE TERMINALS AT THIS TIME WITH
VISIBILITY CONTINUING TO LOWER. DESPITE VIS LOWERING...CEILINGS
REMAIN VFR FOR MOST LOCATIONS AT THIS TIME. EXPECT SNOW TO
CONTINUE THROUGH THIS AFTERNOON WITH SNOW INTENSITY INCREASING AND
VIS LOWERING TO AROUND 1 MILE...AS CEILINGS CONTINUE TO LOWER TO
MVFR. STILL ANTICIPATE STEADIER IFR/SNOW LATE THIS AFTERNOON INTO
THE EARLY EVENING...BEFORE THIS SNOW DIMINISHES WHILE EXITING
AROUND THE 2-5Z TIME FRAME TONIGHT
. WITH MVFR CEILINGS LOWERING
THIS EVENING...GUIDANCE IS HINTING AT THE POSSIBILITY FOR IFR
CEILINGS DEVELOPING TONIGHT. CONFIDENCE IS LOW WITH THIS
POSSIBILITY...BUT DEFINITELY CANNOT RULE OUT. MVFR CEILINGS WILL
REMAIN MONDAY MORNING...SLOWLY IMPROVING THROUGH MID DAY. EAST
SOUTHEAST WINDS PREVAIL...AND WILL REMAIN THROUGH THE AFTERNOON
WITH GUSTS AROUND 16KT STILL POSSIBLE. WINDS WILL THEN TURN TO THE
SOUTH AND SOUTHWEST THIS EVENING AND OVERNIGHT...BECOMING MORE
WESTERLY ON MONDAY.

We've got a solid dusting out here at Valpo.  Really most things are bare, with some drifts to a coating, haha.  It was like this when I woke up about an hour ago and hasn't really changed at all since then, even with snow falling the whole time.

They're definitely dendrites, but they're somewhat small.
