wisconsinwx
The last two weeks have been mostly suckage, besides the new years storm, which was more hassle than it's worth. This last minute clipper bust is just gravy on the turd.
hawkeye_wx
wisconsinwx, you are about to get good snow from a clipper train. Over here in Iowa we are in a dead zone this month. I got 1 inch on January 1st, but nothing since. The upcoming clipper train should largely miss us to the northeast. Chicago already has nearly twice as much snow as us this winter and it will only get worse. I was just checking some snow totals around the region and Omaha and Sioux City don't even have 5 inches this winter!
wisconsinwx
I know, and I'm hoping for a pattern change that allows big storms to traverse the country in a more w to e fashion so most in the Midwest can benefit at some point.

Hopefully they get some relief out in California come February/March with some rain or else it's going to be a really bad year for wildfires. Hoosier
With Thursday's snow, we've gone over 30" on the season. Exact number for snowiest winter here is debatable but for some perspective, over 40" is a very good winter and it's an elite winter anytime we get into the 50"+ range. First part of winter has been about as good as it gets.

Chicago WX
I-65 is going to be a terror tomorrow and maybe on Sunday with blowing and drifting. Just shut it down after the first flake falls tomorrow. Took 52 into LAF today on my drive from IKK. Wasn't bad, but from 41 where you get onto to 52...and then to Fowler, it was a little dicey. Coolest thing was about 10 miles west of Otterbein...I ran into a pocket of relatively heavy snow. And then it was back to partly cloudy.

It's laughable how much of a departure that run is from previous runs. Given that and the fact that it's waaay out there, well, nobody should be putting much stock in it. But really, I was just kidding. Just had a meltdown. Just kidding. I wonder if it's a bogus run or if JB is going to bust big time. Imagine if there's a torch right when he said there would be brutal cold? Fantasy land GFS garbage. Though, a relaxation will occur at some point...but I'm thinking first week of February is game. Not winter cancel though, at that point. It's laughable how much of a departure that run is from previous runs. Given that and the fact that it's waaay out there, well, nobody should be putting much stock in it. Total 180. Perfect example of why op runs are completely useless outside 6 days. Geos
Geos strikes me as the LAST person who would want winter to end! It can calm down on the cold part anytime now. 20s for highs with snow a couple times a week would be fine at this point. I want to see if I can get to day 60 of snow cover - in a row. Don't get me wrong, I still love to track winter storms, I enjoy snowfall and snow cover, and I am very interested in extremes, but bitter cold just doesn't cut it for me any more. Completely understandable. Plus locked in big time cold usually spells drier conditions...which I don't think anyone wants. Of course I still like a brief big cold shot every now and then...but I'm a big winter weenie. Maybe that'll change when I get old like you. Don't get me wrong, I still love to track winter storms, I enjoy snowfall and snow cover, and I am very interested in extremes, but bitter cold just doesn't cut it for me any more. To an extent this is me as well. I love tracking the events, I love watching them unfold, and as long as they are punctuated with post wind and snow I'll enjoy them during that time as well. This is really what made the last big storm miss here so painful to me. It wasn't just that we missed a storm, (we miss storms every winter), it was that the storm was followed up by 2 days of high winds and brutal temps and everytime I looked out the window or heard the relentless roar of the wind, all I could think was imagine if we had a fresh snow cover with this. That's TRUE winter weather right there and we missed that window. Hopefully we'll get another shot since this winter seems to be pretty fruitful this year. Other than that, if we are in a stretch of torch, I root for the torch to continue. If we are in a stretch of extreme winter, I root for that to continue as well. Once late FEB hits, shut 'er down and bring in Spring, I hate late winters which is not a good position to have when you live in CMH where no one does a March or April snowstorm like we can. It's interesting how so many people I talk to are worn out by the cold and, yet, really, this month has been nowhere near as severe as the Januaries of 1977,1978,1979,1981,1982,1984 and 1994, at least here in Toronto. I think Canadians have lost their legendary resilience to the cold. In January 1977, for example, as well as February 1979, this city apparently experienced week after week of severe cold, not the two or three day shots of cold that this month has provided. That is a good point. I think part of the issue is the major swings in temps rather than consistent cold. You get a couple of days of 'torch', then temps plunge and it makes it seem worse. I feel that people get kind of used to it if it constantly remains below normal. Using my back yard as an example, look at the temp pattern at FWA for this met winter. I was living in Ottawa in January 2009, a very cold month. It reached the stage where subzero cold (without the wind factored in) didn't phase me as much. You'd walk out your door, and you'd think, "oh, it's minus 22 Celsius again".
Chicago WX
January 1977 cold is once in a lifetime type stuff. It's the only January/month on record for Indianapolis that didn't have one day that broke freezing. Amazing really, when you think about it. michsnowfreak
This winter has had its thaws but I wouldnt call anything a torch. In fact...if I have ONE gripe in this stellar winter, its that we lost 21-inches worth of snowpack without temperatures exceeding 45F lol. The pre-Christmas "torch" saw our 8" snowpack reduced to a T, and temps never exceeded the mid-40s (primarily staying in the upper 30s to low 40s...fog, high dews, and rain didnt help). Then...our beautiful 17" snowpack (which included drifts well over 2 feet) was beaten down to an average of 4" (which still had foot drifts but also bare spots) when mid-January saw 3-days in a row of temps above freezing but once again, not exceeding 45F. Been a cold snowy winter with a few snafus messing with perfection.
IWXwx
Josh, I was using torch facetiously, hence the quotes around torch. In the new vernacular, anything that melts the snowpack is a 'torch'. lol

Liking my chances to get that 60 day mark. What do you have so far? Would probably only take a few days near 40° or a rain storm to end it. Don't get me wrong, I still love to track winter storms, I enjoy snowfall and snow cover, and I am very interested in extremes, but bitter cold just doesn't cut it for me any more. Haha. I'm almost 32 and I don't really like anything below 10° anymore. I love tracking winter storms, but extreme cold air comes with more problems and expenses imo. Completely understandable. Plus locked in big time cold usually spells drier conditions...which I don't think anyone wants. Of course I still like a brief big cold shot every now and then...but I'm a big winter weenie. Trent
This has been an extremely frustrating January sitting just on the edge of continual snow to the west. Yesterday was no exception with the snow pretty much sliding south and east of here. Sunny skies and sneaking up to 33 here today was just enough to melt off most of the inch that was on the ground. Just a trace of snow remains now and the visible satellite shows decent snow pack just to the west. IMBY for the first 19 days of January, only 8 have had highs below 32. Luckily there's a patch of open water on Lake Erie keeping the threat of Lake Effect alive once the winds finally turn NW here.
