Snowstorms
bump and edited Tomorrow at this time were going to see the models revert back to a major snowstorm for the GL/OV area but no one will notice because they'll still be crying about today's runs. Minnesota Meso
I am normally not one to complain about the weather, it is what is, but if we don't get rid of this -EPO coupled with the AO going negative we could wait along time for a stretch of 5 or 6 days of temps near normal. It's been brutally cold up hear in the MSP metro area over the last 5 weeks or so. No big snow storms. Nothing but clippers with cold temps, chemicals don't work on the roads. Hard to believe that with these cold temps that the ski slopes, snow machine retailers, and that those that sell snow throwers are doing very well. The only ones that are doing good would be the Auto Repair shops. The clippers are nothing more than stat padders. If you think this is a melt down wait until Jan 15th -20th if a change isn't in the offering. The meltdown could be of epic proportions.
IWXwx
I don't want to clutter the storm thread with a rant. The 'second' wave was a complete swing and a miss for MBY. FWA, just to my northeast, did pick up 0.9" over night. Grand total for the first two waves, MBY 0.6" FWA 1.1" The grand finale better put out, otherwise my semi facetious 2.6" contest call for FWA is going to be looking good. I really shouldn't complain since the weather has been at least exciting to watch, especially with the models looking like a carp washed up on shore. We also have the possibility of a storm winding up across the area Sunday, followed by perhaps historic cold.

B-Rent
It's not up to regulation, but I finally made a snowboard. Now go ahead and cancel the snow for this week. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Whitelakeroy
Another EPIC snowstorm with 18"+ results for several but as expected not MBY!! LOL ... Glad I have accepted the fact that 18"+ storms are just an extremely RARE part this area's history. I know I live in the most boring location in the MidWest for EPIC events. I moved to my dream home and honestly VERY happy to travel to SW and NW MI to get my 18"+ storms (1-2 hour car drive and I have a place to stay in those locations). Whitelakeroy
How much did you end up with, Roy? I haven't measure but something around 6". Let's just say plenty to go have fun on. My 3-4" of solid ice/crusty snow is well covered. The hill in my yard would have been painful sledding without this beautiful snow!
cyclone77
This weekend's storm is about enough to make me want to vomit. We just cannot catch a ****ing break around here anymore. Chicago WX
I've been on a couple of multi-year droughts myself the last decade. It massively sucks. I wish him well too. Indeed it does. For pure snow events, I went from Feb 2007 to March 2013 (not counting the tainted GHD). But, we've been a roll here since March 2013. So, it can turn around fast...if LAF can do it, anyone can. Which I'm sure it will for him in the not too distant future.

Chicago WX
How many 6"ers do you average? Approximately one every two winters/years. That's an average over the years. They tend to run in bunches and have longer droughts.

Same here. Can go a 2-3 years without one and then get 4 or 5 in one winter. Works out to about 1.8/year at YYZ but with a high standard deviation. michsnowfreak
Approximately one every two winters/years. That's an average over the years. They tend to run in bunches and have longer droughts. Whats the longest LAF has gone without a 6"+ storm? At DTW I think I had it figured out at 1.3 per year, but that number has been put to shame since 2000 . The longest Detroit went without one was almost 5 years, 9 months. No 6"+ storms occurred from February 12, 1944 through November 24, 1950. BY FAR the most impressive is the fact that from January 31, 1939 to November 24, 1950, just ONE 6"+ storm occurred, and that was just barely at 6.3" on Feb 10/11, 1944. What a pathetic decade the '40s were. Just wow. Nothing else in Detroits snowstorm records comes close.
cyclone77
Cyclone's usually pretty even keeled. Must be going really shitilly for him to go on a rant. Combination of a pretty crappy day of work only to come home to see another round of disappointments. Really shouldn't be complaining here since it's been pretty snowy this season. Constantly getting grazed by the meaningful systems has gotten extremely old though, especially when you see previously blessed areas picking up 10-18" of snow today lol. Oh well, I'm starting to accept the fact that we're in a multi-year period of lameness here. Guess it happens at every location at some point, unless you live near an oversize area of fresh water lol.
Sidewinder
I'm snowed in after this last storm and it was only 6-7 inches. Truck won't start, battery is green but has no cranking amps. Huge 2 foot drift next to it preventing me from even trying to drive out in my other vehicle and the driveway drifted shut after blowing it open once. The weekend's event is looking to be much worse. And anytime we see that much cold the winds are usually brutal bringing it in. Not looking forward to working Sunday and there is a storm behind the cold too. Maybe too early to look at, but around day 6 its another .6" + hit to indy. Winter is definitely back here.
ukrocks
I know there's another 10 weeks left until our snowfall chances dwindle in Louisville but I have not seen a 6+ inch snow since February 2011, and only three since 2004. In fact, I have only see one three inch snowfall in the last three years. I'm tired of the cold and no snow around these parts. We probably average one 3+ inch snowstorm every other winter and a 6+ inch snowfall every four winters. Granted, there will be better days, but it's getting frustrating. And who knows maybe I will celebrate before the winter is over.
