Bobbitt is annoying. He tests the waters and will vanish until activity picks back up again. His warnings are like warnings about warnings. Mods will catch on.....eventually. I take my warnings like a champ.

Should a way-gone cold front sweep the piedmont, and a Way-cross Walmart parking lot flizzard envelope your pond, do not cross if the surface appears frozen, trust me, the ice is very thin, and you will likely fall through without a friendly hand giving the reach.

What did everyone have to eat over the holiday's? Any ham, turkey, chicken, deer, cow, bird, etc.?

Nice plot, I take it this your 6-10 day forecast...  Standing Rib Roast, ribs 1-6, charred at 450 for 30 mins, followed by a nice slow cook to 125 F internal temp.  Covered, for 30 mins, probe dead center 8# mass, served with a fresh tiger dill, your pot clean the sinuses out?  My sauce will...

I've been in more snow that you've wished for. I'm not talking about those Chapel Hill flizzards, I mean a snowstorm.  I watched it accumulate at a 3" per hour rate all day after an all night rain and the temp never got below 34º. Oh, before you bring sun angle into the discussion, the date was April 28th.  Lest you think I was in Alaska, the state was Virginia.

I'm with ya j. Like I said previously, the January 2000 snowstorm was a prime example of that. And the sun angle thing.... we got 8 to 10 inches on March the 25th in Greenwood, SC in 1970.

Those are pretty rare, and I still wouldn't classify those as good snows, just snows that ended up not being absolutely nothing at all.

Eight inches to one foot of snow is not a good snow???? REALLY???? Now don't get me wrong, I would much rather have a snowstorm with temperatures in the 20s and even dropping into the teens, but 8 to 12 inches of snow no matter the temperature, I would think, would be classified as a good snow. Well I'll take it anytime.

I just can't seem to get myself involved in the pattern discussion. I don't see anything to get excited about. All of the so called possibilities are missing key ingredients for snow in our area.  The track doesn't look right on some, no high to the north on others and general lack of sustained cold overall, just does not make me want to jump in and talk about coulda, woulda, shoulda day after day.  When I do jump in though, you better get ready for some fun weather.  Hopefully it is before the spring severe season.

I'd rather have 4" of sleet than 10" of snow. And I got what I wanted in 2/1979 and 1/1988! They have about the same water content but 4" of sleet probably would stick around longer.

Larry, Larry, lol, next you'll be wanting a big zrain :)  But I'm glad you're on my side.  Let it sleet, let it sleet, let is sleet, lol.   We get those huge spring snows and sure you get 8 or 10 inches of wet slop, that's pretty for a while, and quickly gone.  Sleet has some whoomph to it.  Stays around and says hi to the cold cold that come down after.  Sleet is for winter, snow is for spring :)  Unless you get a good mix of sleet with it :)   Tony

Well I actually like a good sleet storm myself, but I would much rather have the snow. I mean accumulating sleet looks like snow but it looks like rain when falling, and to me that's one of the most beautiful features of a snowstorm....the beauty of the snow actually falling. I remember those two storms very well myself, I got a good 8 to 10 inches of snow in both of those storms and then several hours of heavy sleet. It was wonderful to say the least.

Et tu, Burnsy...snow angst?  I find when the no snow blues come on me, a good slam with a hammer on my big toe focuses the mind :)

Seriously.... This is when I start to get interested, once Christmas is past.  With one to three chances that are possible every winter, I just go from one to the next and try not to look ahead at the next game on the schedule.  And I look to my team mates to help me concentrate on one storm at a time :)  Hell, you've got football to look forward too, and I've got one of the worst teams in the country..the most snake bit anyway :)  And we all have to winter olympics coming up in a short while.  I'm really needing a 24 hour a day winter weather porn binge!!  T

Well, I agree with you about the beauty of the snow falling. It is awesome So, advantage snow regarding the sense of sight when falling. However, nothing beats the loud pinging of the sleet as it hits things. I bet Tony agrees. It is great for sleeping...white noise that drowns everything else out since it is so loud. In contrast, you hardly hear the snow. (Of course, the quiet of the snowfall is beautiful in its own peaceful way to be fair.) So, advantage sleet regarding the sense of hearing when falling. Truthfully, I wouldn't complain about either lol.

Oh, I kid, but snow is amazing in it's own way.  Watching it fall for hours, walking in the woods in the dead of night like it's all lit up.  The soft, soft sound of it brushing it's neighbors on the way down, then piling up with tiny sounds just audible.  Everything still.  The crunch of your shoes, the squeek when it's deep enough so your tread doesn't find the ground.  Birds shaking it off, or it sluffing from the pine bows.  It's magical, mystical, mesmerizing beauty.... the very soul of natures art.

It's Mozart....sleet is Led Zeplin, lol.  and I like to rock!

Anyway, Tony pointed out the hours of sleet that came with his, and usually you get the whole melange, a little z, some sleet, and a snow dump.  It's all so awesome it ought to happen year round, instead of all this heat we waste time with down here :)  Tony

Not angst.  I really don't live or die for snow, although I thoroughly enjoy it when it comes.  I just don't see anything on the horizon worth talking about.  Too many 240 plus hour discussions to interest me.  Even when they show a storm it's like watching a super model walking toward you from a distance.  You can fantasize all you want, but deep down you know that before she gets to you she will veer off and over to the guy with the Ferrari.  One thing you can be sure of.  No one has ever heard a super model say, "I really like that guy with the moles".

Don't let the hit or miss aspect of the 12/31 "storm" get your hopes up guys. We should have more chances in January, which is why I'm still focusing more on pattern than this little threat. The 31st storm seems like just a bonus to me.

What do you think about the trend of troughing in the west again?  False signal, transient, or legit?  If it's the latter, then probably half of January is shot.

I wonder what things would have been like in December of 1987 if we had this weather board.  Record warmth and severe storms in mid December, followed by flooding rains at Christmas time................

I bet things would have been a complete train wreck on here, not knowing that one of the all time great west to east snowstorms was going to hit on January 6-7th.

Sure, we can get blanked again, but we have already had two anemic winters in a row.  Pulling a third isn't impossible, but I also don't think it's probable either.

I'm traveling on the road and other than the 0z Euro mean I haven't looked at anything, but I'd need the 12z and 0z runs to come to see whether or not I buy into it. It might be seeing it verbatim but I have my doubts, could just be having issues in the pattern to come.

the euro ensembles have been doing this in the 13 to 15 day timeframe for about ten days now. Only to correct east with the trough as we get closer. It could be right, time will tell. But a trough east of Hawaii would argue against it. It also keeps low heights over Cuba. Go figure.
