Interesting observation and theory I have from last night and this morning. Guidance last night had a significant inversion last night (46-48) and it took until around 2pm to clear out and by that time 925 to 850 temps had already out run the low level temps and today's high was progged under somewhat of a cap. What's interesting about this is that with last nights temps staying warm with mixing, now we have much less time to mix out today. In fact, via my roof it looks like we went isothermal around 9:30am and have started mixing ever since. Given the early start today, I don't think it's unreasonable to say that 71-73 is possible today if there is good sunshine.

Interestingly, there are more record highs below 70 in Dec (6) than Jan (3) or Feb (4).

DCA stats

I was sorta thinking anecdotally but the sun angle alone makes it feel weird. North facing spots stay damp and noticeably cooler on a day like this.. Clouds are hard to burn off if they are around. Even by Jan the sun angle is a little more favorable although it also is battling peak climo cold so a wash maybe. Could also be that many Febs since I have been here have seen a day near 70.

It seems really noticeable in Feb once you get past the 10th or so.
